Leopards goal at buzzer elevates Wentworth 9-8 over Seahawks

BOSTON, Mass. (Tuesday, February 25, 2025)-- The Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards possessed the ball as the clock ticked down and fired off a goal with seven seconds to go elevating the host 9-8 over the visiting Salve Regina University Seahawks at Sweeney Field.

History: Today's meeting was the 26th all-time meeting between the Leopards and Seahawks in men's lacrosse.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salve Regina began the game with a 3-0 lead thanks to Chris Koltzan's book end goals of Ryan Bothe's first goal of the season. The leopards responded with a 3-0 run, however Koltzan would score his third goal of the day to advance the Seahawks 4-3 by the end of the first quarter.
  • The Leopards established a two-goal 6-4 lead by the end of the first half with a dominant second quarter.
  • Liam Cooney and Luke Castillo combined for three goals in second half tying the game at 7-7 with 13 minutes remaining in the contest. Following another success from the Leopards Heath Sumwalt, with his fourth goal of the season, tied the game at 8-8 and it looked like the teams would go to overtime. 
  • With seven seconds remaining Leopards' Tyler Longo shifted towards the Seahawk goal and converted the final goal of the game, swinging the verdict in favor of Wentworth 9-8. 
  • Goalies William Kein and Andrew Hazard combined for 14 saves. Leopards' Tom Gardner made 13 stops. 
ON THE HORIZON
On Saturday, March 1, men's lacrosse will be back on the Gaudet Field turf for a 1 p.m. game against Nichols College.
