Seahawks pick up first NEWMAC win of season

NEWPORT, R.I. (Saturday, March 15, 2025)-- Salve Regina women's lacrosse picked up their first win of the year and a NEWMAC win with a 15-9 victory over the visiting Wellesley College Blue at Gaudet field. 

Kayli Garcia, who ledthe team in scoring with five goals on the day, started out the game with a goal just one minute into play, which was followed up by another from Cameron Baston to put Salve Regina up 2-0 with an early lead. Wellesley fought to match the Seahawks with two goals in the first quarter but Salve Regina lead 4-2 going into quarter two. 

The turning point in the contest was the second quarter when the Seahawks jumped out to a 12-2 ten-goal lead and were able to extend it to 14-2 by five minutes into the second half. Wellesley made a countermove, gaining momentum in the final quarter of action with a four-goal run to end the game. The Seahawks successfully held off the Blue after having established a 12-goal lead early in the game and achieved a 15-9 NEWMAC win.

History: Last year Salve Regina beat Wellesley 12-7 at the Blue's home Butler Stadium. It was the Seahawks's first NEWMAC win as a new member of the conference. Daniella Bruno was the team leader with three goals.

  • Kayli Garcia lead the team with five goals and Edie Threshie followed with four.
  • Freshman goalie Flynn Kayajan played the full 60 minutes and made seven saves.
  • Salve Regina outshot Wellesley 39-19.
  • The Seahawks picked up 30 ground balls, led by Edie Threshie who grabbed six.
  • Adelaide Baird caused three turnovers as the leader.
  • The Seahawks controlled 16-26 draw controls.
  • Salve Regina was 8-16 on free position shots.

Women's lacrosse will play Rivier University on Wednesday, March 19, at 7 p.m. on the Road in Nashua, New Hampshire.
