Mariners spring upset on #5/#6 Seahawks, 4-3

NEW LONDON, Conn. - #5/#6 Salve Regina University baseball took a 1-0 lead after batting in the top of the first at Mitchell College on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field in New London, Connecticut, but the Mariners rallied for a 4-3 victory with the help of a couple of unearned runs. The Seahawks (9-3) outhit the Mariners (5-12), 7-to-5, but could only muster single runs in the first, fourth, and sixth innings, and were fighting from behind since the second.

All-Time Series: Salve Regina entered today's game with a 13-3 mark in the all-time series since 2010. The Seahawks had won the last the last four meetings including a record-setting (since broken) 27-2 triumph in Newport one year ago to the date. The Mariners had last won on the back end of a doubleheader in May 2021 when both teams had qualified for the NCAA postseason and still had room for games to add before the championships began.

NOTEWORTHY

  • James Keating (L, 1-1) started and took the loss after working four frames and allowing only two earned runs.
  • Keating (4), James Tobin (2), Nick Callano (2), and Andrew Wertz (3) combined for 11 strikeouts of the Mariner batters.
  • Shane Williams led the Seahawks with two base hits.
  • Brandon Grover led off the game with a double and scored the first run.
  • Tyler Petrosino had a ground rule double in the eighth that would have tied the game with a teammate running from first base.
  • Seahawks stranded the bases loaded in the top of the eighth and left 10 runners on base over the nine frames.
