Seahawks trail pride 3-2 in NEWMAC opener

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- (Saturday, September 20, 2025)-- Salve Regina University field hockey overcame a 2-0 deficit to fall in a close 3-2 conference game to the vising Springfield College Pride in the NEWMAC opener on a sunny afternoon at Gaudet Field.

Springfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead when the pride scored once in the first, second and third quarters. Julia Decker got the Seahawks on the board at the 39:09 mark in the contest with her 11th goal of the season, as Salve Regina's leading goal scorer. With just five minutes remaining in the game Bella Gannon converted as a result of a penalty stroke to make it a one goal game. However, the visitor held off the hosting Seahawks for the remaining five minutes of action.

Records: Salve Regina (5-1,0-1 NEWMAC), Springfield (5-2,1-0 NEWMAC)
History: Salve Regina is 2-1 against Springfield since joining the NEWMAC in 2023. The first time the teams met as conference members was a 5-4 victory for Salve on September 16, 2023. The following year the Seahawks claimed a 4-1 win on the road. In 2024 Shannon Kennedy sank two goals then Georgia Costello and Angelina Regels added to the total.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Siany Ortez played the full 60 minutes in net for the Seahawks. Ortez made 14 saves.
  • Springfield outshot Salve 18-16 over the course of the game.
  • Salve Regina had a 9-4 penalty corner advantage.

ON THE HORIZON:
Next week the Seahawks are on the road against Nichols College on Wednesday, September 24, at 7 p.m. in non conference play.
