Seahawks battle Wellesley to overtime in defensive showdown

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. — The Salve Regina University field hockey team battled Wellesley College through 60 minutes of scoreless action Saturday afternoon at Gaudet Field before the Blue seized a 1-0 overtime NEWMAC victory.

The Seahawks turned in a determined defensive performance, keeping Wellesley off the scoreboard throughout regulation and forcing the game into overtime. Salve Regina goalkeeper Siany Ortez was instrumental in the effort, making three saves, including a pair of stops during a late Wellesley push in the fourth quarter.

Salve Regina generated several promising opportunities of its own, particularly during the second and third periods. Jordyn Pineau led the Seahawks with four shots, while Elliot Lund added two attempts. Pineau nearly broke the deadlock early in the third period when her shot struck the post.

The Seahawks also earned four penalty corners, matching Wellesley's total, with Grace Warnick providing strong service on Salve Regina's opportunities. In the third period, Salve Regina created consecutive penalty-corner chances, including a shot from Sage Mauro that was saved by Wellesley goalkeeper Hannah Simmonds.

With neither team able to find the breakthrough in regulation, the contest moved to overtime. Salve Regina's defensive stand had limited Wellesley to just seven shots through the first four periods, while the Seahawks entered overtime having registered seven shots of their own.

Wellesley ultimately ended the defensive battle 2:18 into overtime when Gabi Chen converted a pass from Madeline Hamstra for the game-winning goal.
