NEWPORT, R.I. (April 9, 2006) -- Salve Regina University baseball scored all three runs with two outs in their last at bat to defeat visiting Nichols College, 3-2, in the opener of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader in Newport. The Bison took the second game, 4-1, for a split.
Steven Tressler (SO/Phoenix, Ariz.) singled in pinch-hitter Matt Leonard (SO/Ridgefield, Conn.) with the game-winning run with two outs in the seventh inning to lead the Seahawks past the Bison 3-2. Matt Finlayson drove in the other two Seahawk runs earlier in the inning with a single that scored pinch-hitter Robert Peruzzotti (SO/Mystic, Conn.) and Alex Bush (SR/Jamestown, R.I.)
Richard Fuller (JR/Danbury, Conn.) pitched a complete-game for the Seahawks, striking out 11 while scattering eight hits to improve his record to 3-2.
The Bison responded with a 4-1 win in the second game of the doubleheader, breaking a seven-game losing streak to the Seahawks. Salve Regina only managed three hits off starting pitcher John Kostas (SR/Milton, Mass.) who pitched a complete-game for the Bison.
Kostas got all the runs he would need in the second inning, when the Bison scored three runs of starting pitcher Adam Olerio (JR/North Kingstown, R.I.) who got the loss for the Seahawks, dropping his record to 3-2. Brendan Haire (SO/Waterford, Conn.) scored the only run of the game for the Seahawks in the second inning on a passed ball.
