Lania, McAllister power Seahawks past Lions, 2-1

Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Sophomores Tony Lania (Concord, Mass.) and Sean McAllister (North Arlington, N.J.) scored first-half goals to lead Salve Regina University to a 2-1 win over Eastern Nazarene College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Gaudet Field.

Senior Kurt Ginthwain (Pawtucket, R.I.) - playing his final regular-season home contest - made three saves to earn his ninth win of the season for the Seahawks (11-5-1, 8-3-1 TCCC). Sophomore Dan Bemis (Alton Bay, N.H.) scored for the Lions, who slipped to 0-16-1 (0-11-1 TCCC).

Lania got the Seahawks on the board at 13:24 when he took a pass from junior Ken Johnson (Colonia, N.J.), ran down the right side of the field, and fired a shot inside the box that beat junior goalkeeper Andrew Trice (Quincy, Mass.). McAllister pushed the lead to 2-0 when he drove a free kick from approx. 25 yards out on the left side into the top right corner of the net at 37:18. The Seahawks closed the half holding an 18-1 edge in shots.

The second half was much more closely contested and saw the two schools each fire off five shots. Eastern Nazarene broke Salve Regina's hopes for a shutout at 86:35 when sophomore Corey Knudsen (W. Wareham, Mass.) flicked a header over to Bemis, who headed a shot inside the right post.

"Similar to our match this past Sunday with Colby-Sawyer, the wind was a huge factor in today's game," said Salve Regina head coach Craig O'Rourke II. "When we had it at our backs during the first half, we were able to go at them and keep them under sustained pressure. Then in the second half when they had the wind with them, they were able to play out of their end more and come at us. I thought this was a much improved Eastern Nazarene side then the one that we played last year in Quincy - coach (Tom) Newell continues to do great things with that program and they are going to start to see some real results very soon."

Trice finished with four saves for the Lions, who were outshot 23-6 on the afternoon. The Seahawks held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Seahawks close the regular season with a 3 p.m. road contest at Gordon on Wednesday. Eastern Nazarene hosts Wheelock Monday at 3:30 pm.
