Seahawks blank Eastern Connecticut State, 4-0

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshman Kelly Allan (East Killingly, Mass.) scored her first two collegiate goals and classmate Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) potted her team-leading third goal of the season to lead the Salve Regina University field hockey team to a 4-0 win over Eastern Connecticut State in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Lawrence Avenue Fields.

Senior Devin Eppley (Darien, Conn.) needed to make only two saves to earn her second win of the season for the Seahawks, who have posted back-to-back wins following a season-opening loss at WPI on Tuesday.

"I was very impressed with our team's play today," said Salve Regina head coach Jen Eldridge. "Our team played hard and together for the entire 70 minutes, and I was pleased with the play of (junior) Lindsey Burt (Hopedale, Mass.) and (sophomore) Michelle Massey (Mendon, Mass.). We have one more non-conference opponent before TCCC play begins, and we're hoping to ride the momentum from this win into conference play.

Burke got the Seahawks on the board 1:21 into the contest when she banged home a pass from junior Brittany Lopes (Lexington, Mass.), and the Seahawks went on to outshoot Eastern Connecticut State 14-0 in the first half.

The Seahawks continued to pour it on in the second half, and were rewarded for their efforts just 5:15 into the stanza when Allan scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from Burt. She tallied her second collegiate goal less than seven minutes later at 62:00, and Lopes first goal of the season at 61:10 off a pass from senior captain Andrea Michel (Yarmouth, Maine) capped the scoring.

Salve Regina outshot the Warriors 28-3 and held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners. Allan finished the afternoon with a team-high eight shots on goal while Lopes and Burke each recorded five.

Senior Tia Mucciarone (Franklin, Mass.) made 10 saves in the first half before being replaced by sophomore Danielle Reichardt (Ocean Township, N.J.) to start the second half. She finished with 12 saves.

The Seahawks return to action on Tuesday when they host Salem State at Gaudet Field at 4 p.m. The contest will be the first for both the field hockey team as well as Salve Regina athletics on the new 'FieldTurf.'
