Porter scores in OT to send Seahawks past Purple Knights, 5-4

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Freshman Rachel Porter (Franklin, Mass.) scored her second goal of the game 14 seconds into overtime to lift the Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team to a 5-4 win over St. Michael's College in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) action Saturday night at St. George's Rink.

 

Junior Kristen Cokely (Cambridge, Mass.) scored twice and sophomore Drew Chernisky (Vallew View, Ohio) dished out three assists for the Seahawks, who have now recorded at least one point in 12 of their last 13 decisions (9-1-3) and improved to 11-3-3 (8-1-3 ECAC) on the season. Freshman Chrissy Skrzat (Lansdale, Pa.) scored two goals and added an assist for the Purple Knights, which fell to 3-14-1 (1-12-1 ECAC) and 5-13 all-time against Salve Regina.

 

Freshman Samantha Zitzer (River Forest, Ill.) staked the Seahawks to a 1-0 lead at 17:42 of the first period, but the Purple Knights evened the tilt just 1:41 into the second when senior Sarah Landis (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored her second of the season.

 

The Seahawks rallied back with a pair of goals by Cokely at 2:19 and Porter at 11:07 to take a 3-1 lead, only to see the Purple Knights answer back with a pair of goals by Skrzat at 15:40 and sophomore Kiera Nelligan (Melrose, Mass.) at 17:25 to make it a 3-3 game. Cokely's second of the night at 18:20 put the Seahawks back in front by a score of 4-3, and Skrzat's second of the night with 56 seconds left in the second period evened the game at four. Porter's OT winner was her second game-winner of the season.

 

The Seahawks outshot the Purple Knights 32-22 on the evening and went one-for-six on the power play, while St. Michael's was unable to cash in on their three PP chances. Freshman Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.) made 18 saves to improve to 7-0-0 on the season for SRU while junior Alysia Goldman (Bollston Lake, N.Y.) made 27 saves for St. Michael's.

 

The Seahawks return to action on Sunday when they host Manhattanville at 2 p.m. The Purple Knights travel to Norwich on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
