Box Score 2 NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior Rick Vail (Lynnfield, Mass.) recorded seven hits and seven RBI to lead Curry College to a doubleheader sweep of Salve Regina University in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) baseball action Sunday afternoon at Brother Reynolds Field. The Colonels won game one, 27-1, and game two, 11-3.
In game one, the Colonels laced 28 hits and scored multiple runs in each of the first six innings. Senior Jesse Bruisma (Lynnfield, Mass.) went 4-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored, Vail went 3-for-6 with four RBI and six runs scored, and senior Tim Sweeney (Walpole, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored. Junior Sean Jackman (Stoughton, Mass.) stroked three hits and drove in a pair while junior Carlos Cornejo (Lake Forest, Calif.), sophomore David Stevens (Deerfield Beach, Fla.), and freshmen Brian Morante (Westwood, Mass.) and Matt Mattrick (Grafton, Mass.) all drove in two runs each. Senior Tom Glynn (Woodbridge, Conn.) drove in the lone run for the Seahawks (9-8, 3-3 TCCC).
Senior Cory Moore (Lynn, Mass.) allowed four hits and one run over five innings to earn the win and move to 2-0 on the season for the Colonels. He walked none and struck out seven. Sophomore Nick Politelli (Warwick, R.I.) allowed six hits and eight runs in 1.0 inning of work and fell to 1-1 with the loss.
In game two, Curry scored five times in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Vail. A sacrifice fly by Cornejo in the third made is 6-0 before the Seahawks struck three times in the fourth to cut the deficit in half. Senior Riley Diaz (Miami, Fla.) and junior Alex Melcher (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) each had RBI doubles for SRU while junior Brendan Tapley (Warwick, R.I.) plated another run with a shot to left that put him on second. He was then called out on an appeal at first base.
In the seventh, a two-run single by junior Ben Blasdell (Marshfield, Mass.) sparked a four-run inning and pushed the Curry lead to 10-3. The Colonels tacked on another run in the seventh on a single by Sweeney to close the scoring.
Senior Cory Collins (Whitman, Mass.) allowed 12 hits and three earned runs in six innings to pick up the win, his third of the season. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. Junior Craig Silva (Marlborough, Mass.) took the loss for Salve Regina, allowing 12 hits and nine runs over 5.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out four.
The Seahawks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to North Dartmouth for a 3:30 p.m. contest with the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth. The Colonels host Western New England in a TCCC doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 2 p.m.
