NEWPORT, R.I. - Juniors Alex Melcher [Poughkeepsie, N.Y.] and Matt Capone [Barrington, R.I.] each collected three hits apiece to lead Salve Regina University baseball to a sweep of Anna Maria College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader in Newport (6-3 and 7-4).

Junior Craig Silva [Marlborough, N.J.], who got the win in relief in extra innings last night against Colby-Sawyer, got the start in Game 1 and threw a complete-game allowing just seven hits and one earned run while striking out two.

With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 5th, Brandon Bursie [Smithfield, R.I.] led off with a double down the left field line. After Charles Matarazzo [Montville, N.J.] received a base on balls, the two Seahawks advanced on stolen bases. With second and third and one out, Melcher failed in his attempt to lay down a suicide squeeze bunt. Bursie found himself in a pickle and escaped with the go-ahead run.

Tom Glynn [Woodbridge, Conn.] followed with a two-run double and came around on an RBI single by Riley Diaz [Miami, Fla.] to make it 6-2 in favor of Salve Regina.

Jeff Kodys [Holden, Mass.] led off the Anna Maria 7th inning with a solo blast to left field, but Silva earned his team-leading fifth victory when freshman Mike Guarnieri [Wallington, Conn.] ended the game on a soft liner to Glynn at third.

Salve Regina (13-9; 6-4 TCCC) scored in every inning of the second game except the fifth. Melcher added an insurance run in the sixth with his second homer of the season. Lefty reliever Pat Quinn [Middletown, N.J.] struck out five of the nine batters he faced to save the win for starter Nicholas Politelli [Warwick, R.I.].

"We played baseball today," said Seahawk head coach Steve Cirella. "Finally didn't make stupid mistakes, kept our heads in the game, and our pitchers did a great job. To win two against a tough conference team is a great accomplishment."

The sweep also provided a milestone for Cirella who moved into a tie with his predecessor Andy Andrade for the school record for most all-time baseball coaching victories (243).

Junior second baseman Andy Fallon [Worcester, Mass.] went 3-for-3 with two RBI in the nightcap for Anna Maria (12-9; 6-6 TCCC).
