Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Freshman Marlie Mochamer (Framington, Maine) scored off a rebound with less than six minutes remaining in the opening half to lift the University of New England women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Salve Regina University during Senior Day at Gaudet Field on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Nor'easters to 10-2-2 overall and an impressive 6-0-1 during CCC play. The loss drops the Seahawks to 10-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the conference.
Before the match, the Seahawks honored seniors Kathleen Roche (Boston, Mass.), Maggie Kane (Bangor, Maine), Meghan Lovely (Auburn, Mass.), Jordan Sileo (Bristol, Conn.), Liz Galla (Beacon Falls, Conn.), Mallory LaPierre (Bristol, Conn.), Kelsey Jacobsen (Albany, N.Y.), Erin Connolly (Woodbury, Conn.), and Jackie Lee (North Reading, Mass.) for all of their contributions to Salve Regina athletics.
This match featured the top two teams in the conference, as both clubs entered the game without a single loss during conference play. From the start, the contest lived up to its billing as both teams battled to gain control.
The scoring opportunities were few and far between for both clubs, as they combined for just five shots on goal in the opening frame.
The Nor'easters finally broke through in the 46th minute of play when Mochamer collected a rebound off a shot by teammate and fellow freshman Nicolette Caron (Scarborough, Maine), and beat the Salve Regina goalkeeper with a shot into the bottom right corner of the net for what turned out to be the game-winning score.
The Seahawks did their best to rally in the second half, as the team built a 6-1 edge in corners.
Salve Regina nearly tied the score in the 59th minute when junior Kaitlyn Birrell's (Hope, R.I.) header off a corner kick was put a goal but saved by UNE goalkeeper Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.). Birrell had a second chance in the 71st minute, driving a shot to the bottom right corner which was once again turned away by Woodworth to preserve the 1-0 victory.
The Nor'easters will return to Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Wednesday when they host Eastern Nazarene at 4 p.m., while the Seahawks take to field again on Tuesday, welcoming Roger Williams for a 3:30 p.m. match.
