Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team scored three power play goals on their way to a 6-3 victory over Saint Michael's College during an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East contest at St. George's Ice Rink on Friday night. With the win, the Seahawks even their record to 3-3 (3-3 ECAC), while the Purple Knights fall to 0-6-1 (0-6-1 ECAC).
Junior Melanie Sherlock (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the charge for the Seahawks, compiling three points on a pair of goals and an assist, while senior Jen Thiesing (Sandwich, Mass.), junior Samantha Zitzer (River Forest, Ill.), and junior Rachel Porter (Franklin, Mass.) each contributed both a goal and an assist in the win. Senior Kristen Aiello (Braintree, Mass.) added a goal of her own in the win, while freshman Michaela Chiuccariello (Winchester, Mass.) dished-out one assist. Junior Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.) earned the victory in net for the Seahawks, making 16 saves to improve her season mark to 1-1.
The Purple Knights were led by freshman Kristen Spulecki (Orchard Park, N.Y.) who totaled three points on two goals and an assist, while senior Kelly McDonald (South Burlington, Vt.) added both a goal and a helper in the loss. Senior Madelena Santore (Millington, N.J.) also played well, collecting one assist on the night, while goaltender Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn.) made a game-high 30 saves in between the pipes for the visitors.
The Seahawks took the lead midway through the opening period when Thiesing and Chiuccariello set up Zitzer for the game's first score.
Salve Regina expanded their lead to 2-0 when Melanie Sherlock took a pass from Porter and fired a shot from the outside and beat the Purple Knights' goaltender for a power play goal.
Porter stretched the SRU lead to 3-0 early in the third period, stealing the puck and then beating the goalie one-on-one for a shorthanded marker just 1:14 into the middle frame.
Saint Michael's fought back when Spulecki scored her first goal of the game off a pretty pass from McDonald to close the Salve Regina lead to 3-1 heading into the third period.
The Seahawks then put the game away with three quick scores within the opening four minutes of the final frame. Sherlock got things started with an unassisted tally and was followed by power play goals from both Thiesing and Aiello to give the home team a commanding 6-1 advantage.
The Purple Knights received goals from both McDonald and Spulecki before the final period concluded, however the Seahawks held on for the 6-3 victory.
Both teams resume conference action on Saturday at 7 p.m., as the Purple Knights travel to face Holy Cross, and the Seahawks host the reigning DII National Champion Cadets of Norwich.
