Guillotte gets complete-game victory for Bears over Seahawks

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior Brian Guillotte (New Bedford, Mass.) pitched a complete game while striking out 13 batters to lead visiting Bridgewater State University baseball to a 4-3 victory over Salve Regina University in a non-league meeting.

Salve Regina (12-14) had opened its season in Vero Beach, Fla., against the Bears and that game featured 10 pitchers combined from both teams and a total of 29 runs as Bridgewater State (10-10) ended its Florida schedule with a 15-14 walk-off win in the bottom of the 9th (March 11 box score).

"Today we pitched well," said Seahawk head coach Steve Cirella. "(Daniel) Kehew probably had just one pitch that he regrets, a fastball over the plate, but he showed strong innings as did (Michael) O'Neill in his first mound appearance in awhile. Devin (Flynn) and (Nicholas) Politelli kept them off the bases."

Daniel Kehew (Portsmouth, R.I.), who has been used exclusively as a reliever prior to today, got the start and went five innings with five strikeouts. The Bears reached him for a single run in the 3rd when Ian Williams (Taunton, Mass.) singled with two out and came home on a Tyler Dennis (Stoughton, Mass.) basehit to right field.

A leadoff walk in the 5th came around to score on an RBI single by junior Joshua Ferreira (Fall River, Mass.). Ferreira later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Matt Greenburg (Norwell, Mass.).

Salve Regina got those two runs back in its 5th inning. Senior Patrick Quinn (Middletown, N.J.) doubled in Anthony Conte (Georgetown, Mass.) who had reached base on an error. Quinn was doubled in by classmate Jason Sluberski (Verona, N.J.).

"We got a lot of players in the game, but we watched too many strikes," said Cirella when asked about his team's hitting. "We need to be more aggressive especially in runners on base situations."

Guillotte did not issue a walk in his nine innings of work. Dennis added another RBI single in the 7th for the Bears who took a 4-2 into the last at-bats for the Seahawks.

Nicholas Dell'Anno (Reading, Mass.) started a rally with a one-out single in the 9th. Brendan Tapley (Narragansett, R.I.), the third Seahawk catcher of the day, singled through the left side. With two outs, senior shortstop Alexander Melcher (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) brought the Seahawks within one with his RBI single to right field.

Junior shortstop Corey Batista (Fall River, Mass.) made a fine play to stop a Devin Flynn (Auburn, Maine) fielders' choice grounder to end the game.
