Salve Regina wins its fifth straight game

Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Salve Regina University women's soccer jumped out to an early lead with a goal in the fourth minute against Rhode Island College and never looked back, en route to an 8-1 victory over the Anchorwomen at RIC Soccer Field on Tuesday evening.

The Seahawks capitalized on an early opportunity when sophomore forward Erin McCullough (Ludlow, Mass.) ripped a shot while breaking in from the right side. The ball went in and out of the arms of RIC sophomore goalkeeper Abygayle Fisher (Exeter, N.H.) and sophomore midfielder Stephanie DeLue (Hadley, Mass.) pounced on the rebound and found the back of the net to put Salve Regina on top, 1-0.

It was all Seahawks from that point on as SRU netted four more goals over the next 20 minutes to put the game out of reach. The visitors went into the halftime break with a 5-0 lead as Salve Regina (5-1) outshot the Anchorwomen, 14-4, over the first 45 minutes. The Seahawks finished with 29 shots, while RIC totaled 11 in the contest.

RIC (2-3) was able to scratch a goal late in the second half when senior midfielder Jenna Childs (Cranston, R.I.) took a free kick from the top of the box. Her initial attempt was denied by senior netminder Kathleen Roche (Boston, Mass.), but freshman midfielder Danielle Peloquin (Pawtucket, R.I.) knocked in the loose ball to spoil the Seahawks' shutout bid. For Peloquin, it was her third goal of the season, which is tied for the team lead.

McCullough led the charge for Salve Regina, notching two goals and two assists for six points in the win. Freshman forward Lauren Bulk (Portsmouth, R.I.) and junior striker Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) each finished with a goal and an assist, while senior midfielder Jordan Sileo (Bristol, Conn.), senior forward Liz Galla (Beacon Falls, Conn.) and junior midfielder Ashley Jamieson (Warwick, R.I.) rounded out the scoring for the Seahawks.

Roche and sophomore starter Jessica Lane (Marshfield, Mass.) combined to shut down the Anchorwomen in net for Salve Regina, with Lane recording her fifth victory (5-1) of the season.
