Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina men's soccer team notched three second half goals to earn a 3-0 victory over Eastern Nazarene in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship tournament quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 14-5-1 overall, tying the program's all-time record for wins in a season set in 1998 and later matched in 2010, while the loss drops the Lions to 7-9-2 on the year.
Senior Brian Sweeney (Waldoboro, Maine) scored the game-winning goal for the Seahawks, while sophomore Jake Weinshank (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and freshman Andrew Chenard (Kingston, Mass.) each added markers of their own. Senior Bobby Ernst (Needham, Mass.), sophomore Kyle Knoth (East Islip, N.Y.), sophomore Devin L'Heureux (Litchfield, N.H.), and freshman Rainer Randell (Providence, R.I.) each dished-out an assist for Salve Regina, while freshman Jeffrey L'Heureux (Litchfield, N.H.) made three saves to record the shutout in net, improving to 5-1-1 on the year.
Sophomore Jake Johnson (Mount Bethel, Pa.) made seven saves in goal for the Lions, dropping to 6-7-2 on the season.
The first half was closely contested, with the Seahawks holding a 6-4 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corners, but neither team was able to score.
The Seahawks finally broke through in the 59th minute when Devin L'Heureux took a corner kick and whipped a ball into the back post where Bobby Ernst elevated and drove a header downward toward the goal where it deflected off of Brian Sweeney and into the net for what turned out to be the game-winning score.
Salve Regina extended its lead in the 67th minute as Rainer Randell intercepted a pass played negatively by an Eastern Nazarene and went 1-on-1 with the ENC centerback before slipping the ball into the forward space of an on-rushing Jacob Weinshank. Weinshank ran onto the ball and with his first touch, buried his shot past the ENC keeper for the 2-0 lead.
The Seahawks then sealed the match in the 80th minute when Kyle Knoth picked up the ball for a throw-in deep in the Salve Regina attacking third and proceeded to toss a 60-yard bomb that took the entire Eastern Nazarene defense by surprise. The throw-in, which reached the far post with ease, was touched across the goal line by a leaping Andrew Chenard for the Seahawk's third goal of the contest.
The Seahawks now advance to the CCC semifinals, hosting #6 Gordon on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
