Seahawks shutout Purple Knights, 2-0

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - Senior goaltender Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.) stopped all 20 shots she faced to help lead the Salve Regina women's ice hockey team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Saint Michael's during an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East contest at St. George's Ice Rink on Friday night. The win marked the 14th straight victory over Saint Michael's for the Seahawks who improve to 6-4-0 overall and 4-3-0 during ECACE play, while the Purple Knights fall to 1-6-0 on the season and in the conference.

Senior Samantha Zitzer (River Forest, Ill.) scored the game-winner for Salve Regina, while freshman Kelsey Lynch (Collegeville, Pa.) added a second period marker to help seal the win. Freshman Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) led all players with two points, dishing-out a pair of assists, while Muehlbronner earned her first shutout of the season.

Senior goaltender Erin Stevens (Watertown, Conn.) took the tough-luck loss in net despite stopping 46-of-48 shots while setting the Saint Michael's mark for career saves in the process, finishing the game with 1,851 career stops. She is currently closing in on becoming just the 23rd goalie in Division II/III history to amass 2,000 saves.

The Seahawks outshot the Purple nights 15-5 in the opening frame, taking the lead on a power-play goal scored by Zitzer off assists from Phalon and junior Shannon Coleman (Chicago, Ill.).

Salve Regina controlled the second period as well, holding a 21-8 advantage in shots on goal. Lynch gave the Seahawks some breathing room at the 18:34 mark of the frame, putting back a rebound off a shot from Phalon to stretch the SRU lead to 2-0.

The Purple Knights had several opportnities to score in the third period, however Muehlbronner made several nice stops, compiling seven saves in the period to close out the 2-0 win.

The Purple Knights will be back in action on Saturday, traveling to face Holy Cross at 7:30 p.m., while the Seahawks are off until next Friday (4:30 p.m.) when they faceoff against Wesleyan (Conn.) at URI's Boss Arena.
