Cruver blanks Golden Bears; Seahawks split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior pitcher Jen Cruver (No. Haven, Conn.) struck out nine and limited Western New England University softball to just two hits as Salve Regina University won Game Two of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader, 7-0, at Toppa Field in Newport. The Golden Bears bested Cruver in the opener, 3-1.

Cruver's batterymate, junior Megan Jakiela (Meriden, Conn.), collected five hits in eight at bats in the twinbill. She also had a run batted in plus a run scored. First baseman Jillian Quintana (Denver, Colo.) went 3-for-3 in the nightcap with two runs scored and an RBI.

Three other Seahawks had multi-hit performance in Game Two, including the top three in the batting order - Laura Anne Dinan (Monterey, Mass.), Jennifer Edine (Warwick, R.I.), and Marissa Simpson (Brimfield, Mass.).

Western New England (8-10; 3-3 CCC) Game One starter senior Sarah Lempicki (Plantsville, Conn.) scattered six hits to six different Seahawks and went the distance in a 3-1 victory to improve her overall record to 4-2. Her classmate and batterymate, Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, Mass.), singled in the first run of the game in the 1st inning, scoring Maria Francese (Hinsdale, Mass.) who reached on an infield single.

Salve Regina (12-10; 7-3 CCC) tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd on a Dinan double to left field. Senior Kristen Parolise (Hamden, Conn.) led off the inning with a single to third base. Cruver sacrificed her over to second before Dinan delivered the RBI double.

The game remained 1-1 until the Golden Bear 6th. Freshman outfielder Jocelyn Agnelli (Winchendon, Mass.) opened the frame with a single to right field and advanced to second on a passed ball. Francese reached safely when her slap bunt was fielded and the Seahawks attempted to get Agnelli at third. Lempicki lifted a fly ball to right that would deliver the go-ahead run, and she reached safely when the fly was dropped.

Pinch hitter Emily Mastropaolo (Cazenovia, N.Y.) drew a bases-loaded walk for a 3-1 WNE lead.

The Seahawks threatened in each of their last two at bats, but ended with four left on base with the final out in both innings coming as force plays at third.

Salve Regina scored six runs in its first three innings of Game Two while also leaving six on base, two in each inning. Quintana and Jakiela had 1st-inning RBI; Simpson singled in Dinan in the 2nd after the rookie rightfielder doubled with two outs. Leftfielder Zeena Barbarita (Johnston, R.I.) started a three-run 3rd with an RBI double to left, for a 4-0 lead and forcing the exit of senior starter Alyssa Obin (Plymouth, Mass.). Parolise and Edine had groundouts that produced runs.

Meanwhile, Cruver was perfect through the first three innings. Francese's speed led to the first Western New England hit as she beat out a bunt to third base leading off the 4th.

The Seahawks loaded the bases in the 6th and scored a run when Cruver's infield pop was misplayed. Cruver (11-10) retired the first two batters in the 7th on a pop to shortstop Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.) and later a grounder to the junior captain. Her ninth punchout ended the game for her fourth shutout of the season and eighth of her career.

Salve Regina hosts Rhode Island College on Tuesday at Toppa. Western New England plays at Amherst on Wednesday.
