Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. – Junior Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.) and freshman Marissa Gagnon (Smithfield, R.I.) both notched hat tricks as the Salve Regina University field hockey team soared to a 9-0 victory over Daniel Webster at Gaudet Field on Tuesday night. The impressive victory evens the Seahawks overall mark to 4-4 on the year, while the Eagles fall to 0-5 on the season.
Bucci and Gagnon led the Seahawks' offense, each compiling seven points on three goals and an assist. Freshmen Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) and Julia Grover (Cotuit, Mass.) also had strong nights, each contributing both a goal and an assist in the victory. Sophomore Jessica Williams (Franklin, Mass.) added a goal of her own, while junior Heather Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass.) and senior Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) each chipped in with assists. Sophomore Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) earned the victory in net, improving to 4-4 on the year.
Junior Danielle Melanson (Buffalo, N.Y.) made a game-high 10 saves in net for the Eagles.
The Seahawks scored the opening goal of the game in the 10th minute of play with Kapatoes setting up Bucci off a corner to give Salve Regina a 1-0 advantage.
The Seahawks then struck for a pair of goals just 35 seconds apart in the 14th minute of play. Bucci centered a pass to Grover who blasted the ball into the back of the box to stretch the SRU lead to 2-0 before Burke drove to the goal and then slipped a pass to the left post for Tepper who redirected the ball into the goal to give the Seahawks a 3-0 edge.
The score remained 3-0 heading into the intermission with Salve Regina holding a 21-1 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corners.
The Seahawks broke the game open in the second half, as Bucci completed her hat trick with a pair of goals to start the period, putting Salve Regina on top 5-0.
Gagnon led the Seahawk attack the rest of the way, scoring three goals while assisting on a fourth, to seal the 9-0 victory for the Seahawks.
The Eagles return to action on Thursday, hosting Colby-Sawyer at 4 p.m., while the Seahawks hit the road to face Western New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest starting at 6 p.m.
