Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - Salve Regina University softball started its 2013 schedule with games against Brandeis University and Case Western Reserve University. The Judges topped the Seahawks, 8-4, and the Spartans followed with a 5-0 triumph.
Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.) led the team at the plate with three hits against Brandeis, including a line-drive triple to center field in the bottom of the sixth.
The Seahawks were the first to score in the bottom of the third, but the Judges immediately retaliated in the top of the fourth.
Although Brandeis was able to rise to a 6-1 lead, the Seahawks would not be kept down for long. In the bottom of the sixth Jillian Quintana (Denver, Colo.) homered with a line drive to center field, allowing Muehlbronner to score. Seahawks pitcher Jen Cruver (North Haven, Conn.) recorded two strikeouts and allowed 10 hits for the Judges, while Brandeis pitchers Nikki Cote and Casey Ducinski racked up seven strikeouts and only five hits.
The team then went on to a hard game against Case Western Reserve University. Quintana ruined Rebecca Taylor's no-hitter pitching streak with a single in the sixth inning, achieving the only hit by the Seahawks.
Overall the team suffered 10 strikeouts by the Spartans pitchers Taylor and Rebecca Molnar, while Seahawks pitchers Cruver, Dominique Burnham (Scarborough, Maine), and Marissa Simpson (Brimfield, Mass.) combined for four strikeouts while allowing nine hits.
