Owls slip by Seahawks, 5-4

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. - Freshman Billy Hartmann (Greenland, N.H.) knocked in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly and four Owls pitchers combined for seven and a third innings of solid two-run relief, enabling the Keene State College baseball team to post a 5-4 come-from-behind non-conference win over Salve Regina University at Owl Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Winners of three of their last four games, the Owls improve to 9-14.  The Seahawks (15-6) saw their five game winning streak come to an end.

Keene State fell behind 4-0.  Salve Regina scored two runs in the top of the second on RBI singles by freshmen Ryan Sweenor (South Kingstown, R.I.) and Ryan Kelly (Waldwick, N.J.). They scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-0 lead on a run-scoring single by Sweenor and a RBI double by junior Dominic Di Sano (Central Falls, R.I.).

Held in check by Seahawk starter senior Daniel Kehew (Portsmouth, R.I.), the Owls were able to break through and score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  With the bases loaded, freshman Brett Dootson (Marlborough, Conn.) brought home one run with a sacrifice fly.  Two more runs came home on an infield throwing error.

Keene State tied the game (4-4) in the bottom of the seventh.  Sophomore Ray Carmel (Waterford, N.Y.) reached on an error and came home on another sacrifice fly by Dootson.

Looking to rally, the Seahawks put their first two batters on base in the top of the ninth following back-to-back singles by Di Sano and junior Nicholas Dell'Anno (Reading Mass.).

Owl reliever junior Vinnie Mangiagli (East Hartford, Conn.) got out of the jam.  He got one out when sophomore Mark Boland (Orange, Conn.) grounded out to first.  Junior Anthony Conte (Georgetown, Mass.) was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases. Kelly hit a ground ball to Owl freshman third baseman Bobby Graham (Amherst, N.H.) who threw to KSC junior catcher Andrew Gummow (Brookline, Mass.) cut down Di Sano trying to score. Mangiagli got the final out when sophomore Sean Becker (Richmond, Va.) flied out to right field to end the game.
