CLERMONT, Fla. - Junior Kelsey Boarman (North Dighton, Mass.) pitched eight scoreless innings but wound up with a loss after Benedictine University (3-1) pushed across two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Salve Regina University softball (0-1), 2-1, at the National Training Facility in Clermont.

Salve Regina's offense had exploded for 14 runs in three innings of the season-opener against Amherst College i(8-3) in an 11 a.m. start. That game was delayed for an hour in the second frame and resumed at 12:40 p.m., before ending as a rain out at 1:35 p.m. with the Seahawks holding a 14-10 lead.

The Seahawks and Eagles were scheduled to meet at 1 p.m., but that was pushed back three hours due to the rain.

Series and Streaks
Salve Regina meets Amherst for the first time in softball, and Benedictine for the first time in any sport.

Three Seahawk Stars of the Day
1 – Salve Regina junior Kelsey Boarman (North Dighton, Mass.) - held the Eagles to just three hits in 8.2 innings while striking out five. She allowed no earned runs.
2 – Salve Regina senior Genevieve Benoit (Swampscott, Mass.) - scored three runs including the only one in the completed game.
3 – Salve Regina sophomore Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.) - had an .800 on-base percentage on the day including two hits in the nghtcap.

Key Stat of the Day
Salve Regina leadoff batter Lindsey Florent (New Bedford, Mass.) drew three bases on balls against Amherst and scored three times - all getting washed away with the rain.

Turning Points
Melissa Stoch delivered a one-out game-tying single in the ninth inning and took second base on a grounder to third by Holly Haberkorn. Stoch crossed the plate with the winning run after Kaile Cable reached on an error.

Quick Hits

• Salve Regina's Boarman also had a tough-luck decision in Florida a year ago against NCAA-bound Moravian, blanking the Greyhounds through eight innings before that team scored three in the ninth (March 9, 2015)
• The Seahawks introduced four freshman to collegiate softball action - Florent, Megan Guest (Meriden, Conn.), Amanda Riley (Barrington, N.H.), and Emily Woznick (Sandy Hook, Conn.).
• Riley had a three-run triple in the second inning against Amherst.
• Benedictine raced to televisions after the softball game to watch the Eagles' men's basketball squad in the NCAA Division III national championship game. St. Thomas (Minn.) spoiled Benedictine's perfecct season in the title match.
