SEAHAWK BASEBALL RESULTS

Salve Regina 12, Curry 6
Newport, R.I. - Reynolds Field
Sunday, May 8, 2016

NEWPORT, R.I. - After traveling around three states and not playing on Saturday, Salve Regina University and Curry College met in Newport to resume the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Baseball Championships. The No. 4 Seahawks and and No. 6 Colonels were half of the teams remaining in the tournament field (top two seeds Western New England and Endicott were postponed again), but today was an elimination game to reduce the field to three. Salve Regina rallied from down 6-4 with eight runs combined in its final three at bats to finish with a 12-6 victory.

Series and Streaks
With 58 meetings now in the books, Salve Regina has dominated the series (39-18-1) which includes winning all three meetings in 2016. Curry, looking to defend its 2015 title, had won the last postseason meeting between the two programs, 6-5, in the third round of last year's tournament.

Three Seahawk Stars of the Day
1 – Salve Regina senior Alex Perry (No. Attleboro, Mass.) - three hits in three at bats included his third home run of the season, a long three-run shot to left center. He finished with three RBI.
2 – Salve Regina freshman John Kussmaul (Brick, N.J.) - collected three hits (all to right field) and made another spectacular diving catch in left field.
3 – Salve Regina sophomore Josh Monson (Bridgewater, Mass.) - faced just five batters in 1.2 innings pitched and struck out three; retired the final batter while chasing a tweener and continued to first base for the rare "pitcher unassisted" in the scorebook.

Key Stat of the Day
Curry finished with more hits (14) in its final game of the season than total victories (13) in 2016.

Turning Point
Four successive hits - from John Militano (Miller Place, N.Y.), Perry, Zack Smith (New Canaan, Conn.), and Tristan Dacey (Wyckoff, N.J.) - with two outs in the sixth produced three runs for Salve Regina to retake the lead, 7-6.

Quick Hits

  • Freshman Colton Eremian (Boca Raton, Fla.) launched his fifth home run of the season with his three-run blast in the bottom of the first.
  • Senior John Arens (Milton, Mass.) had a pair of doubles and a single on a three-hit day.
  • Six Colonels had multi-hit games.
  • Curry starting pitcher Alex McLean (Eliot, Maine) gave up four runs on three hits, walked two, in just one inning on the mound.
  • Reliever Brian Burke (Swampscott, Mass.) suffered his sixth loss of the season (0-6) with four runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
  • Salve Regina freshman Will Ginsberg (Sharon, Mass.) picked up the victory (1-0) with three-hit ball over 3.1 innings including three strikeouts.
  • Salve Regina sophomore catcher Christian Vargas (Melbourne, Fla.) hit his first collegiate triple in the eighth inning to drive in pinch runner Brody Santilli (Lincoln, R.I.) from first base.
