Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University baseball team extended its winning streak to six games with a 7-6 win over Mitchell College in non-conference action.

Series and Streaks
This was the seventh meeting between the teams. The Seahawks now own a 6-1 record against the Mariners all-time and have won the last two meetings.

Three Stars of the Day

  1. Salve Regina junior John Militano (Miller Place, N.Y.) - went 3-for-4 while driving in two runs and stealing a base.
  2. Mitchell senior Steven Gonzalez (Union City, N.J.) - went 2-for-5, driving in three runs, on a double and triple.
  3. Salve Regina junior Josh Monson (Bridgewater, Mass.) - despite allowing two runs in the top if the ninth, Monson struck out the final two batters to leave the bases loaded and preserve the Seahawks win.

Turning Point
After leading since the bottom of the third inning the Seahawks carried a 7-4 lead into the top of the ninth. A single, a walk, and a catchers interference call loaded the bases with no outs to start the inning for the Mariners. Tristan Hurley (Mystic, Conn.) then grounded out to score a run to make it 7-5. After Monson hit Markus Melendez (Storrs, Conn.) on the next at-bat to load the bases he walked Jack Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn.) to bring in another run. Facing a pressure situation with bases loaded and only one out Monson fanned the next two batters, getting Brody Adams (Canterbury, Conn.) looking and Steven Gonzalez swinging to seal the win for the Seahawks.

Quick Hits

  • The Seahawks broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning. Stephen Cirella (Jamestown, R.I.) flied out to rightfield to score Colton Eremian (Boca Raton, Fla.) then Brody Santilli (Lincoln, R.I.) doubled to score Christian Vargas (Melbourne, Fla.)Hunter Sleeper (Arlington, Mass.) then reached first and advanced to second on an error which scored Santilli, and finally John Militano doubled to drive in the fourth and final run of the inning for the Seahawks who went from down 2-1 to leading 5-2.
  • Five different pitchers saw action for the Seahawks. Freshman righty Zach Dionne (Tolland, Conn.) got the win in four innings of action, allowing two runs and striking out two as well.
