Summary
NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University softball improved to 8-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with a sweep over visiting Eastern Nazarene College. The Seahawks trailed to begin each game, but rallied back to take the lead in each. A complete game effort from Jaycee Garrigan (Uxbridge, Mass.) in game one and 6.1 innings of work and seven strikeouts from Andi Nelson (Candia, N.H.) in game two helped the Seahawks to their fourth straight win.

Salve Regina leads the all-time series 42-5 and has won 19 straight over the Lions.

Three Stars of the Day

  1. Salve Regina freshman Jaycee Garrigan allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts to improve to 2-1. She also went 2-for-4 batting in game two, driving in two runs.
  2. Salve Regina junior Amanda Riley (Barrington, N.H.) had three hits in six at bats a two double, two runs scored, and three runs batted in.
  3. Eastern Nazarene sophomore Elisabeth Schaffer (Benton, Pa.) struck out 11 batters over six innings in game one, but falls to 9-4 on the season with the loss.

Key Stat of the Day
Eastern Nazarene scored first in both games. The Lions scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning of game one before surrending three runs in the bottom half and being shutout in the seventh. Then in game two the Lions jumped on top 3-0 in the top of the first before allowing 10 unasnwered runs between the third and fifth innings to give up the lead.

Turning Point
An RBI groundout from Lindsey Flourent (New Bedford, Mass.) followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.) and Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) helped the Seahawks go from down to runs to lead 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning of game one. In game two, the Seahawks trailed 3-0 out of the gate, then tied the game in the third innings with three runs on three hits and a Lions error. Then in the bottom of the fifth the Seahawks exploded for seven more runs on six hits to take the lead.

Quick Hits

  • Lauren Weidler (Landsdale, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with two hits and an RBI in game one then went 2-for-3 with double and an RBI in game two. She also pitched 4.1 innings in game two, striking out two and allowing six runs in the loss to fall to 4-3 on the year.
  • Andi Nelson tossed 139 pitches in 6.1 innings of work in game two, striking out seven, before being relived by Julia Coute (North Dighton, Mass.) who picked up the final two outs of the seventh to close out the sweep for the Seahawks.
  • The Seahawks had four extra-base hits (three doubles and a triple) while the Lions knocked five extra-base hits (four doubles and a triple).
