Seahawks win 20th for sixth consecutive season

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Salve Regina University Seahawks flew past the Lancers of Worcester State University as they tallied 10 runs on 15 hits and four Lancer errors in a Thursday afternoon non-conference matchup at the Kevin D. Lyons Diamond at Rockwood Park.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The scoring began in the top of the third inning when Salve Regina's Anthony Cieszko (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) hit home John Militano (Miller Place, N.Y.) for the 1-0 score. The Seahawks added to their lead in the next inning when Zack Smith (New Canann, Conn.) scored on a Worcester State fielding error.

The Seahawks added in three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 advantage. Alex Perry (North Attleboro, Mass.) had an RBI double, while Smith registered a two-RBI double to centerfield.

Salve Regina added another three runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) and a two-RBI double from Michael DeFusco (East Greenwich, R.I.).

Worcester State reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth on a two-RBI single from William Roberge (Warwick, R.I.) to plate Evan Fritze (Spencer, Mass.) and Keith Dombroski (Sutton, Mass.).

Salve Regina tacked on two more runs unearned runs in the top of the ninth to conclude the game with a score of 10-2.

SCOREBOOK

  • Salve Regina's 15-hit attack was led by Perry and Smith who each batted 3-for-5 on the occasion.
  • Both Militano and DeFusco went 2-for-4 with a walk. DeFusco hit home a game-high three RBI and stole a base from the Lancers.
  • Worcester State's Roberge batted 3-for-4 with two RBI.· Ben Palatino (Hudson, Mass.) went 2-for-3 for the Blue and Gold.
  • Salve Regina's Tom Beliveau (West Newbury, Mass.) earned the win on the mound in five innings pitched. He allowed five hits and struck out four batters. The Seahawks used three relief pitchers. Jonathan Lynch (Cumberland, R.I.) saw two innings on the mound while Zach Dionne (Tolland, Conn.) and Brett Wilkes (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) each pitched one inning.
  • Worcester State's relief pitcher, Brian Twomey (Hudson, Mass.) took the loss. He allowed five runs (one unearned) on five hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched. The Lancers also used three additional pitchers.
  • In the previous meeting between the two teams on April 18, Salve Regina topped Worcester State 10-2.
  • Salve Regina holds an 11-8 edge over Worcester State in the all-time series.
