Maybach, Ginsberg combine for 17 Ks in season-opening win for Seahawks

Box Score

HOKOKEN, N.J. - Senior third baseman Colton Eremian (Boca Raton, Fla.) slugged a two-run homer and added a bases-loaded walk for three runs batted in to back the combined four-hit pitching efforts of starter Patrick Maybach (Saunderstown, R.I.) and reliever Will Ginsberg (Sharon, Mass.) in Salve Regina University's 7-1 victory over Stevens Technology Institute at Dobbelaar Field.

Maybach worked the first six innings and struck out 10 Ducks, including an immaculate inning (bottom of the second) where he threw nine pitches for nine strikes to get all three outs. Ginsberg pitched three scoreless frames and seven of his nine outs came via the K.

The Seahawks took an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Junior catcher Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) led off with a double, stole third, and came home on Michael DeFusco's (East Greenwich, R.I.) two-out double.

Two more runs came in the top of the third when Ketch had an RBI bunt single with two outs to plate second baseman Anthony Cieszko (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) before shortstop Madden Ward (Clinton, Conn.) touched home on a passed ball; both were unearned. Cieszko singled through the right side in the fifth to score DeFusco for a 4-0 lead.

Eremian had the final three RBI with his sixth-inning two-run homer that scored centerfielder Vincent Sorrentino (Schenectady, N.Y.). The Seahawks scored in the ninth without a hit. Zack Barlok (Cheshire, Conn.) led off and was hit by a pitch; Ward walked and Jack Betts (Narragansett, R.I.) sacrificed the two runners to second and third; Ketch was walked intentionally and Eremian took four straight pitches for his base on balls.

Cieszko had three basehits while Ketch and DeFusco both had two knocks; the Seahawks had eight stolen bases with Zack Smith (New Canaan, Conn.) and Cieszko contributing two apiece.

Salve Regina (1-0) opens its 2019 home schedule next Saturday, March 2, when it hosts Fitchburg State University.
