Hawks hold off Seahawks rally

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. — The third-seeded Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team advanced to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinals with a 9-8 win over sixth-seeded Salve Regina University Saturday morning in the CCC Quarterfinals.

A man-up goal by Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.) four minutes in gave RWU the lead, followed by another Bova goal a minute later. Ryan Phillips (Hanover, Mass.) added another tally with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter to put RWU up 3-0. The Hawks appeared to be headed to the second quarter with a three-goal lead, but Ethan Robson (Lincoln, R.I.) used a man-up goal to pull Salve within two.

Robson would begin the second quarter with another goal to make it 2-3, but Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) answered at the 10:54 mark to make it 4-2. A Rich Gneiding (Oradell, N.J.) goal brought the Seahawks back within one a minute later. RWU's one-goal lead lasted most of the remainder of the quarter until the final minute. Shawn Errasti (Duxbury, Mass.) forced a turnover and made his way down the field and put in a shot for his first career goal and a 5-3 halftime lead.

Salve Regina came out of the break hot, with goals by Brendan Kelly (Long Beach, N.Y.) and Pat Leary (Wakefield, Mass.) in the first four minutes to tie the game at five. Later with the game knotted at six, the Hawks put in Harrison Levesque (Killingworth, Conn.) at faceoff which paid immediate dividends. He won his first two draws leading to a pair of RWU goals by Jared Grier (Duxbury, Mass.) and Pat Barboza (Stamford, Conn.) in less than a minute. RWU would take its 8-6 lead into the final quarter.

Salve continued to keep pace with RWU, with Robson scoring two minutes into the period and Gneiding tying the game at eight with 9:17 left. Yet Levesque would win the ensuing faceoff, leading to a Bova goal that would ultimately be the game winner.

The Hawks had a chance to add an insurance goal with about four minutes left. RWU held possession for a two-minute stretch that saw the team put up five shots. Salve's Ryan Chambers (Wakefield, Mass.) made stops on three of those shots with timely goalkeeping to keep the deficit at only one.

With 1:40 left in the game, a Salve turnover gave the Hawks the ball with a chance to run out a majority of the clock, then a pair of Salve penalties gave RWU a two-man advantage. The Hawks were almost able cruise to the win, but an overthrown pass gave Salve one last possession with 15 seconds left. However, the Seahawks were unable to get a shot off as they threw the ball away in front of the net with four seconds left, allowing RWU to escape with the win.

Bova finished with three goals while Mullane added two goals and an assist. Errasti finished with a goal, nine ground balls and three caused turnovers. Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) made 10 saves in the win.

Robson (3 G), Gneiding (2 G, 1 A), and Joe Grimm (Williston Park, N.Y.) [1 G, 2 A] all finished with three points each. Mike Mongelli (Roslyn, N.Y.) added five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Chambers had 14 saves in the loss.

Roger Williams (12-6) will await the results of the other CCC Quarterfinal match to find out their opponent in the CCC Semifinals on Tuesday. Salve Regina closes out the year at 6-8 overall.
