Box Score THROGGS NECK, NY – Leading 11-8, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team saw Salve Regina notch back-to-back goals to pull within one late in the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon. However, Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) scored with 1:23 remaining to put the game away, as the Privateers (2-1) earned a 12-10 victory over the Seahawks (0-2) at Reinhart Field.
Maritime led 9-6 after three quarters before Salve Regina scored twice early in the fourth to make it 9-8. Steven Pinto (Oakdale, NY) responded with two goals in less than two minutes, though, the second coming on the man advantage, to give the Privateers an 11-8 advantage. After the Seahawks pulled within 11-10, Kyle Orton (Lewes, DE) picked up a ground ball with 2:31 remaining. Maritime ran the shot clock all the way down before Tomich fired one past the goalkeeper to give the Privateers the two-goal cushion that would prove to be the difference.
It was a 2-2 game after the first quarter, but the Privateers rattled off five consecutive goals in the second quarter to open up a 7-2 lead. Salve Regina's Liam Cooney scored with 31 seconds left in the half, then the Seahawks got a goal from Mason Barbone a minute into the third quarter. Patrick McGrath (Franklin Square, NY) made it an 8-4 game midway through the period before Salve Regina tallied four of the next five goals to trim its deficit to one, 9-8.
Barbone and Cooney each had a hat trick for Salve Regina. Gavin Johnson paced the Seahawks with five ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Rocco Mazzei also picked up five ground balls. Goalkeeper Ryan Chambers (0-2) was credited with four ground balls to go along with 13 saves.
