Salve Regina sweeps Curry with 15 extra base hits

MILTON, Mass. (April 24, 2022) - Salve Regina University swept Curry College softball team on Sunday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader at D. Forbes Will Field. Seahawks won 11-2 in game one and 8-1 in game two.

With the defeats, Curry drops to 6-29 overall on the season and 2-12 in the CCC, while Salve Regina improves to 14-19 overall and 6-8 in league action. The Seahawks banged out 15 extra base hits, including homers from Nikki Vanelli and Christina Braid, just a year after an historic five-home run inning at D. Forbes Will Field.

 

Game 1 - Salve Regina 11, Curry 2

Curry kept the opening game of the afternoon close in the beginning, but four runs in the top of the third inning saw the Seahawks begin to pull away. 

With the Seahawks ahead 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Curry scored its only two runs of game one to cut the deficit to 7-2. Pinch hitter Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.) scored from first on a throwing error to open the scoring with two outs in the frame. A batter later, junior Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) drove in a run with a base hit off the chalk in right field.

Sophomore Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) took the loss for Curry, allowing seven earned runs in five innings of work. Classmate Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) recorded the lone Curry two-hit game, going 2-for-3.

 

Game 2 - Salve Regina 8, Curry 1

The Curry bats remained quiet in game two as Salve Regina secured the sweep.

The Seahawks scored twice in the first and three times in the third to jump out to an early 5-0 advantage before the Colonels got on the board. In the bottom of the third, sophomore Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) drove in Curry's lone game two run with a single up the middle. 

The Colonels finished the contest with just four hits, with two off the bat of senior Sienna Kulpa (Taunton, Mass.). 

King took the game two loss for Curry, allowing six earned runs over three innings.
