Box Score NORTON, Mass. (April 7, 2022) - Junior second baseman Mike Maher (Jefferson, Mass.) reached base five times and drove in three runs, while senior starting pitcher Stephen Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) struck out nine in five and two-thirds innings to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) baseball team over visiting Salve Regina University this afternoon at Sidell Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. The Lyons have won nine of their last 11 games and improve to 11-7 on the season, while the Seahawks fall to 10-7-2.
Wheaton has scored double-digits in eight of its 11 wins and scored multiple runs in four innings on the day.
Maher was 3-3 with two walks and a run scored for the Lyons and Quigley gave up two unearned runs on seven hits and one walk to improve to 4-1 on the season. Wheaton starting pitchers have now allowed one or fewer earned runs on 10 occasions this season. Eight different batters collected at least one hit for the home team for the eighth time this season, including senior catcher Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.), who hit a three-run home run. Three Lyon relievers combined for three and a third innings of no-hit scoreless ball to close out the game.
Graduate student catcher Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) led the Salve Regina offense, going 3-4 with a double and a run scored, while senior left fielder Jared Beniers (Abington, Mass.) was 1-4 with a run batted in. Junior southpaw reliever Eddie Hardiman (0-1) took the loss after giving up two runs on three hits and a walk to go with a strikeout in two innings of work.
Wheaton scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to break open a scoreless game. Three Seahawks pitchers combined to hold the Lyons hitless through three and two-thirds innings to start the game before sophomore left fielder Will Haskell (Natick, Mass.) reached on an infield single deep in the hole at second base. The knock advanced senior first baseman Drew Spirito (Cranston, R.I.) to third after he began the frame with a walk. Maher put Wheaton on the board with a two-out single to right field to plate Spirito. Sophomore center fielder AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) followed with an RBi double down the right field line to give the Lyons a 2-0 margin.
Wheaton tacked on two more runs in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. DeMattio and Spirito drew back-to-back one-out walks before a single to left off the bat of Quigley loaded the bases. Junior shortstop Cavan Brady (Great Barrington, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to force in the third run and Spirito later scored on a wild pitch for the Lyons' fourth run.
The Seahawks cracked the scoring column with two runs, aided with the benefit of an error. Ketch roped a leadoff single to right field and later advanced to third on a wild pitch with two outs. Graduate student second baseman Dustin Siqueira (Trumbull, Conn.) hit a dribbler to the right of the mound that Quigley was able to field and throw to the plate to put Ketch into a run-down, but the throw from the Lyons' catcher to third base was muffed, allowing Ketch to score Salve Regina's first run of the afternoon. Beniers followed with a single to right to plate Siqueira with the Seahawks second and final run.
Wheaton responded by sending 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning with four of them scoring to give the Lyons an 8-2 cushion. Croteau opened the frame with a double down the right field line before senior right fielder Jake Studley (Barrington, R.I.) worked a walk. DeMattio blasted a three-run homer over the center field fence for his first long ball of the season and a 7-2 Lyons' advantage. Maher later singled in another run to put the home team up by six runs.
Wheaton added two more insurance runs in the eighth to take a 10-2 lead. Brady singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Maher single to center field. Maher later scored on an error to give the Lyons double-digit runs.
Salve Regina threatened to score in the top of the second when Ketch ripped a double to left field, junior Wil McCarthy (Pembroke, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and junior Matt D'Amato (Midland Park, N.J.) reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Quigley was able to get Siqueira to ground to Croteau at third, who threw to the plate for the first out of the inning. Quigley did the rest, striking out the final two batters to get out of the jam for Wheaton.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, April 9 when they travel to Springfield, Mass. to take on Springfield College in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference twinbill starting at Noon, while the Seahawks host Wentworth Institute of Technology in a doubleheader on the same day at the same time.
