Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina trailed the No. 17 Wheaton College Lyons from the get-go, but found a way to mount a comeback and take back the 8-5 victory at Reynolds Field on Thursday.
The Seahawks came into Thursday's matchup following a 11-2 victory over the RIC Anchormen, and with a difficult doubleheader awaiting Salve on Saturday, some may have seen the Wheaton game as somewhat of a trap game. Well, not manager Eric Cirella's Seahawks. Demonstrating resilience day in and day out this season, the Seahawks came from behind to stun the No. 17 Lyons to remain undefeated at Reynolds Field this season.
The Seahawks had a difficult first frame on defense, allowing four runs on three walks and an error, with just two hits. Tommy DelVecchio (Westfield, N.J.) entered for the final third of the first inning to notch a strikeout and get the Seahawks out of the initial frame. After a shaky first inning for the Seahawks, DelVecchio's early relief appearance carried the Seahawks through the next several innings into the top of the fifth. Zach Lopez (New Canaan, Conn.) and Jason Arrigo (Basking Ridge, N.J.) would finish the game off for Salve, combining for nine Ks in the final four innings. Arrigo's one-run performance through 3.1 IP with seven strikeouts and two hits was enough to salvage his second win on the season.
After falling behind in the first inning, the Seahawk bats got going to get the home side back into the game. Tyler Petrosino (Beverly, Mass.) and Dustin Siqueira () had two RBIs apiece. Siqueira went three-for-five at the plate, notching RBI-singles in the fifth and seventh with the latter giving the Seahawks a 5-4 lead. After the Lyons tied the game in the eighth with a home run, the Seahawks were not going to chase again. Savvy base running from Wil McCarthy (Pembroke, Mass.) and RBIs from Shane Williams and Petrosino would put Salve up 8-5, setting up Arrigo for the win.
The Seahawks (13-6, 3-2 CCC) hard-earned win propels them into the weekend, when they will visit the Beacons of UMass Boston (14-6) for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 12:00 P.M.
