Box Score 2 NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Seahawks won both games on Thursday against Bridgewater State University at Toppa Field, bringing the Seahawks to 6-10 on the season.
The Seahawks have now put together three wins in a row after losing seven of eight games to start the season, a much needed turnaround for Salve as they propel into April with great momentum.
Bears 3, Seahawks 11
The Seahawks trailed in the first inning after an RBI-double put the Bears ahead, but Caroline Peterson (Halifax, Mass.) had her fingerprints all over this win for Salve. In five full innings of a mercy-rule win, the recent Silver Lake High School graduate allowed two earned runs on six hits, striking out nine hitters. The Seahawks offense was excellent in this one, but Peterson's dominant outing highlighted what was a great team victory for Salve Regina. This marked the freshman's first collegiate win, making Peterson 1-0 on the season as a starter.
The Seahawk bats were on fire all afternoon up and down the lineup. Hailey Basso (Carmel, N.Y.) and Morganti Bello (Corte Madera, Calif.) enjoyed multi-hit games, while Kylie Lanteri (Berlin, Conn.) and Emily Lane (Tinton Falls, N.J.) led the way with three RBIs apiece. The Seahawks trailed in the first and never looked back to secure the five-inning victory in game one.
Bears 2, Seahawks 4
The Seahawks went down in the first inning once again after allowing an early run, but pitching once again paved the way for Salve to secure a sweep. Sophie Gendron (Oxford, Conn.) was dominant in her start, allowing two runs on seven hits, fanning seven batters and walking none.
The Seahawks were outhit by the Bears 7-5 throughout the matchup as the Salve offense never really got going until the fifth inning. Through the first four innings, the Seahawks saw just three runners in scoring position. In the fifth inning, Sam Franceschi (East Haven, Conn.) ripped a double down the right field line to score the second run of the frame for Salve to give the home side a 2-1 lead. In the sixth, Salve took advantage of some sloppy defense by BSU to plate two more runs. Not one of the four runs that the Bears pitching allowed was considered an earned run as the Bridgewater State defense committed four errors, three of which came in the two innings the Seahawks scored.
The Seahawks (6-10, 0-0 CCC) host the Curry College Colonels (9-7, 0-0 CCC) in a Sunday doubleheader at Toppa Field to open up their conference play for the 2023 season.
