Cannoe shines as Seahawks beat Beacons twice, win fourth straight

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BOSTON -- Tyler Cannoe and the Salve Regina baseball team traveled to the city of champions and defeated the Beacons of UMass Boston twice in the Saturday doubleheader at Monan Park.

Seahawks 9, Beacons 5

The Seahawks trailed 2-0 early after a couple RBI-triples from the Beacons in the first three innings, but once again, Salve battled from behind. Savvy base running from Tyler Petrosino (Beverly, Mass.) and Matt D'Amato (Midland Park, N.J.) helped the Seahawks tie the game in the fifth. In the sixth, the Seahawks enjoyed an RBI-single from Brady Smolinski (North Grafton, Mass.) to get the 3-2 lead. With runners on first and third and two outs, Tyler Cannoe (Schenectady, N.Y.) belted a three-run dinger to the left-center gap to make it 6-2 Salve.

UMass Boston battled right back with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to narrow Salve's lead to 6-5. This frame ended the start for Brayden Clark (Beverly, Mass.) who earned his fourth win of the year from this start. It was a decent one for Clark, who allowed five runs on seven hits, fanning six through six innings pitched. In a one-run game, who else would Salve bring in but Jason Arrigo (Basking Ridge, N.J.), who has been outstanding out of the bullpen this season. Posting a 1.08 ERA across 25 innings pitched, Arrigo notched his third save of the year against the Beacons. Across the final three frames, Arrigo allowed one hit while walking three and fanning four. Arrigo closed out the game to give the Seahawks the 8-5 win after a Christian Homa (Fairfield, Conn.) triple got two more runs across for Salve in the eighth.

Seahawks 10, Beacons 6

The Seahawks bats came to life in the backend of the doubleheader led by the likes of Wil McCarthy (Pembroke, Mass.) and Evan O'Rourke (Arlington, Mass.) who had three hits apiece. Six Seahawks hitters enjoyed multi-hit games as Salve pieced together 16 hits in the 10-6 win over the Beacons.

Tyler Cannoe homered in his second straight game in the third inning, a solo shot that doubled the Seahawk lead. The Beacons came right back with three runs of their own in the third to take a narrow one-run lead before the Seahawk bats continued to swing it. RBIs from Dustin Siqueira (Trumbull, Conn.), Brady Smolinski, Evan O'Rourke and Tyler Petrosino helped extend Salve leads over the course of the game to guide the Seahawks toward the win.

Graham Jeffries (Chelmsford, Mass.) got the winning start for the Seahawks and posted a decent line. He allowed five runs on four hits, walking five and fanning eight through five innings. Sean Mulligan (Verona, N.J.) came out of the bullpen and notched his first career save, throwing four innings while allowing one run and striking out six.

This sweep was the icing on the cake of a 4-0 week for Salve Regina, who has once again received votes in the D3 Baseball Top 25. The Seahawks (15-6, 3-2 CCC) host the Curry Colonels (8-14, 3-4 CCC) on Tuesday, their first of two meetings this season.
