Gendron tosses shutout, Seahawks clobber colonels in doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Seahawks swept the Curry College Colonels in a two-game day on Sunday, marking their first and second conference wins of the young season on Sunday at Toppa Field.

The Seahawks opened up conference play for the 2023 season on Sunday and started out with a brisk 2-0 start, trailing in just two innings across the fourteen that they played on Sunday.

Colonels 3, Seahawks 6

Game one of the doubleheader featured a full team effort needed to get the job done at Toppa Field. A first-inning RBI-single for Kylie Lanteri (Berlin, Conn.) gave the Seahawks an early 2-0 lead, but the Colonels came storming back. In the following two frames for Curry, the Colonels added three runs including a two-RBI double to put the away side up 3-2 in the third. Big hits from a few Seahawk hitters helped to propel the Seahawks into the win column, including a game-tying RBI-double from Maddie Capetta (Raritan, N.J.) and a go-ahead single from Lanteri, her second RBI of the game. In the fifth, Emily Lane (Tinton Falls, N.J.) added insurance with a two-RBI double to ultimately give the Seahawks the win.

Skyler Wicklund (Riverhead, N.Y.) did not get the start, but she did get the win in the first game of Sunday's two-gamer. In 3.2 innings pitched, Wicklund allowed no runs on three hits, fanning three and walking none. Caroline Peterson (Halifax, Mass.) started the game for the Seahawks and had a decent line, pitching just over three innings and allowing two runs on three hits. The outlier for Peterson was her eight walks, but she combatted that with six strikeouts of her own to keep the Seahawks alive.

Colonels 0, Seahawks 6

The Seahawks were much more confident in this matchup, a game dominated by the performance of starting pitcher Sophie Gendron (Oxford, Conn.). Gendron had a great line for the game, shutting out the Colonels through seven full innings pitched, allowing just five hits and striking out four. In her final 4.2 innings pitched, Gendron allowed only two hits and allowed just one runner to reach scoring position in that span.

On offense, Salve contributed twelve total hits to score six runs, a terrific performance. Emma Medeiros (Swansea, Mass.) started things off in the second with an RBI-double, and the Seahawks bats got quiet for a bit. In a 1-0 stalemate through the next few innings, the Seahawks leaned on Gendron's pitching to keep them in the game. In the fifth, the Seahawks broke the game wide open to secure the victory. Emily Lane had a huge two-RBI single to give the Seahawks a bigger cushion late in the game, followed by a loud Sophia Strazza (Wilton, Conn.) two-RBI double to make it 5-0 Seahawks. To really salt things away, Gabriella Messier (Berkley, Mass.) ripped a double down the line to make it 6-0 Salve.
