Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Salve Regina baseball team rebounded from a three-game skid with a convincing 11-2 victory over Rhode Island College at Reynolds Field on Sunday.
The Seahawks came into Tuesday's matchup with RIC with a chip on their shoulder having lost three straight games. The want to win showed on the diamond in the grit that every player and coach brought to the table against the Anchormen.
Following a few scoreless frames, the Seahawks found their way onto the scoreboard. Christian Homa (Fairfield, Conn.) belted a two-run home run to left field to give Salve the early 2-0 lead. Homa is currently batting .417, a mark good enough for third in the conference. Seahawk Matt D'Amato (Midland Park, N.J.) is currently in second with .426, so it is safe to say Salve Regina has no shortage of slugging in their lineup.
After going up 4-0 after four innings, the Anchormen started to claw back as the Seahawks began to falter. In the fifth inning, a solo shot to deep right field was the first real blemish of the game for the home side. This frame would end the afternoon for starter Nick Callano (Ocean, N.J.) as he exited following the fifth inning, but Callano performed exactly how he needed to to earn the win. Callano pitched five full innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out four.
In the top of the seventh, the Seahawks continued to allow the Anchormen back into the game. A dropped pop-up in the infield would have kept RIC off the scoreboard, but it instead allowed a run to score and give the Anchormen runners on second and third with two outs. Sean Mulligan (Verona, N.J.) was able to strike out the final batter to avoid RIC possibly tying the game late.
Following the dramatics through six and a half innings, the Seahawks had seen enough. Homa made excellent contact on a ball to deep left field, but his homer was robbed to take back what would have been Homa's second home run of the afternoon. Nonetheless, Evan O'Rourke (Arlington, Mass.) did his best to avenge Homa with a no-doubter that landed well over the wall to extend Salve's lead to four.
In the eighth inning, the Seahawks continued to pour it on. Drawing a few walks and belting a couple doubles, Salve scored five runs in the eighth to make it 11-2. Wil McCarthy (Pembroke, Mass.) and Mike Breen (Auburn, Mass.) each had a pair of RBIs in the eighth inning alone to seal the deal.
Salve Regina (12-6, 3-2 CCC) will host No. 17 Wheaton College (16-3) at Reynolds Field on Thursday at 3:00 P.M. Facing D3baseball.com top-25 opponents this season, the Seahawks are 1-4, with the four losses being doubleheader losses to Catholic and Endicott. The win came against then-No. 2 Eastern Connecticut. At Reynolds Field, the Seahawks are 8-0 this season.
