Seahawks break game open, clobber Keystone 10-0 in game one of Misericordia Regional

Box Score

DALLAS, Pa. -- Salve Regina opened up the Misericordia Regional with a huge win, defeating Keystone by a score of 10-0 at Tambur Field in Dallas, Pennsylvania.

The matchup with the Giants of Keystone College began as a pitcher's duel headlined by recently named CCC Rookie of the Year Sean Mulligan (Verona, N.J.). The freshman went six shutout innings throwing 92 pitches, allowing two hits and fanning five. Mulligan pitched most of his outing with a slim 1-0 lead and kept the Seahawks in the game until a breakout inning that did not come until after his outing.

In the bottom of the second, the Seahawks delivered with back-to-back singles from Brandon Grover (Ashland, Mass.) and Wil McCarthy (Pembroke, Mass.). Mike Breen (Auburn, Mass.) reached on a throwing error that got Grover home to give Salve an early lead. However, with second and third and nobody out, the Seahawks could only muster the one run. After a bit of a war of attrition between the Knights and Seahawks for five innings, the seventh inning called for a whole lot of action. Five straight hits including a base-clearing, three-RBI double from Gianfranco Messina (Cranston, R.I.) made it 4-0 Seahawks. After loading the bases, Christian Homa (Fairfield, Conn.) wore a pitch on the elbow pad to force home a fifth run and extend the Seahawks lead. Tyler Cannoe (Schenectady, N.Y.) delivered next with a two-RBI single down the right field line to make it 7-0. After a couple wild pitches and a McCarthy RBI-single, it was a ten-run slugfest in favor of Salve.

Sean Mulligan battled through a tense ball game that helped keep Salve alive until the big seventh inning to get Mulligan a well-earned win, his fourth of the season to make him 4-0. The one-seeded Seahawks will enjoy their win and look to continue their winning ways on Saturday against the winner of the matchup between No. 26 Misericordia (33-12, 18-6 MAC Freedom) and Washington & Jefferson (31-12, 17-3 PAC), which takes place Friday at 1:30 P.M. First pitch for the Seahawks next game is expected to be at either 12:00 P.M or 2:30 P.M. at Tambur Field on Saturday.
