Box Score 2 NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina baseball is in the midst of a historic stretch, having extended its winning streak to 13 and its unbeaten streak to 21. The Seahawks defeated the Nichols College Bison in both ends of the Friday doubleheader at Reynolds Field.
No, this is not Brad Pitt's Moneyball or Billy Beane's Oakland A's repeating history with a legendary streak. However, it is close, as the Seahawks have accomplished a similar feat: 21 straight games without a loss, the longest streak nationwide in Division III baseball. Salve Regina does have the rare tie (5-5 @ WNEC on 4/15) due to a rain cancelation, and had that game resulted in a victory for Salve Regina, a win streak of 21 games would blow any other streak in the nation out of the water.
Bison 1, Seahawks 4
Another first inning, another crooked number for the Seahawks bats. Sluggers Tyler Cannoe (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Christian Homa (Fairfield, Conn.) picked up RBIs in the first. Cannoe belted a double down the line to score Matt D'Amato (Midland Park, N.J.), and Homa hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Brandon Grover (Ashland, Mass.). Homa (40) and Cannoe (38) are both top-five in the CCC in RBIs. The Bison answered in the third with a sac-fly of their own to make it 2-1, but that was all for the Bison bats. In the fifth and sixth innings, Wil McCarthy (Pembroke, Mass.) and Dustin Siqueira (Trumbull, Conn.) delivered with insurance RBI-hits to seal the deal for Salve Regina.
It was the conference-leader in wins (8) on the mound for Salve in the form of ace Brayden Clark (Beverly, Mass.). Clark went five innings and allowed one run on three hits, fanning five. Clark leads the CCC in wins as well as strikeouts (79), with a familiar face right behind him in the rankings in both categories…
Bison 4, Seahawks 11
Three runs in the first inning setup the Seahawks defense for success… again. RBIs from McCarthy and Evan O'Rourke (Arlington, Mass.) made it 3-0 Salve after one inning, and the Seahawks were not done. The Seahawks added eight more runs across the next three innings, including a solo shot from O'Rourke to pull the muleta out from in front of the Bison (olé!). The Seahawks offense featured five hitters with multi-hit games including Siqueira who went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Graham Jeffries (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned himself win number seven on the year, good enough for second in the conference behind teammate Clark. Jeffries threw five innings, allowing three runs on five hits including one home run. Jeffires also had four Ks, which moved him into second in the CCC in strikeouts (72).
No. 16/25 Salve Regina (31-6-1, 13-2-1 CCC) finished up conference play in second place behind No. 5/8 Endicott College (35-5, 15-1 CCC) who defeated Salve twice earlier this season. After their Sunday doubleheader visiting Southern Maine, the Seahawks look to do some damage in the postseason.
