Sailing closes out season at Southern 7 Fleet Race

KINGSTON, R.I.-- Salve Regina University Sailing raced in their last regatta of the spring 2025 season with six Seahawks competing.

Southern 7 FR at URI Roster: Conditions:
  • Medium-to-high level breeze that tapered off as the day went on
  • Extreme variation in breeze direction and velocity

The day of sailing ended up being much shorter than anticipated. The extremely heavy rains lead to an hour delay and, in the later half of the day, dense fog rolled in. URI's race committee decided to call off racing early that day.

Kate Johnson: As the last regatta of the season, how do you feel that the team has developed as a whole?

Sean Morrison: I think that everyone has very noticeably developed. Our freshmen class have been great all season and are getting so much experience at some high level events. I think that all of the other underclassmen have really taken a step up while building on what we learned last year. Coaching has been at the center of all of that as well.

KJ: What will you do over the summer break to help continue your development in the boat and be ready to compete in Fall 2025?

SM: I am coaching sailing over the summer as well as sailing J70s to keep my skills developing. Also I think with the introductions of team workouts and this upcomingfall to have more, the summer will be a good time to start.

KJ: With about a quarter of the team graduating, what are your hopes for the team next year?

Julia Overmyer: I know I speak for everyone when we say there is going to be a big piece of the team leaving with our graduating seniors. However, with the knowledge, experiences, and memories they have passed down to us. I'm extremely excited for our upcoming seasons, hoping to carry on their legacies in NEISA's top 15!

KJ: What advice would you give any potential recruits or athletes about collegiate level sailing?

Emilia Perriera: To recruits, I would say that you get what you put into collegiate level sailing. You don't have to be the most experienced on the team to succeed, but you need to be the most committed. The people who grow and excel the most are those who put in the work, ask questions, and are actively engaged in the sport on and off the water. Sailing is a very mentally demanding sport and that's what makes it so rewarding.

As I come to a close of my college sailing career, I have many bonds, memories, and experiences to carry with me, even after I cross the commencement stage. Prior to university, I had little-to-no experience in sailboats, but the potential to join the sailing team was one of the primary reasons I chose Salve.

The sailing team has flourished into success over the past year, but that is not to dismiss setbacks and challenges they have overcome. Each member shows resilience and adaptability out on the water and in the classroom.

Sailing in university has provided me the opportunity to learn a new sport in arguably the best college sailing venue in the United States. I have developed as an athlete, as a leader, and as a person by being a part of this team and I have truly learned that you get what you give. I am so fortunate that I could call Newport my home over the past four years and have developed life-long bonds with teammates. Even though I wish I could be with my teammates for every step of the way, I am so excited to see where college sailing takes them.

Thank you for joining me for the Spring 2025 sailing season. This is your captain Kate Johnson, signing off.
