Quoting Coach Manning:
"College sailing features two primary racing formats: fleet racing (held in the fall and spring) and team racing (contested in the spring only). In fleet racing, we field two boats, one of which races against a 17-team field on a shared course. In team racing, three Salve boats compete head-to-head against three boats from another school, rotating through a round-robin schedule of opponents.

This weekend marked a milestone for the program, as Salve earned its first-ever team race victory. While there is still work to be done before performing similarly at the highest level, the result is a strong indicator of the team's growth and upward trajectory.

That progress is rooted in the approach taken last spring, when we stepped back from team racing to focus on strengthening athlete foundations and our fleet racing performance. That decision helped our sailors develop a solid technical and tactical foundation, setting the stage for reintroducing team racing this season.

Following a highly productive spring break training block that featured twice-daily practices, film review, and lifts, the athletes' improvement has been dramatic. The difference in execution, communication, and confidence from the start of the season to now is nearly night-and-day.

The team's success this weekend was also bolstered by the addition of assistant coach Nick Johnstone. His presence on the water, often racing alongside the team, has elevated both the level of competition and the overall quality of all team practices.

This weekend's win marks an important step forward for the program, and the team is eager to carry that momentum into the remainder of the spring season. Next week, we turn our focus back to fleet racing as we compete at the Vietor Trophy at Connecticut college and Invitationals at home.

These events will be critical opportunities to prepare for the New England Dinghy Tournament, which we will host on April 4th and 5th and strive to qualify for our Conference Championships."
