ATTLEBORO, Mass. (Saturday, August 30, 2025)-- Salve Regina University men's cross country and women's cross country competed in the Suffolk Short Classic at Highland Park to start off the 2025 season. The team used the opportunity to race the course where the 2025 NEWMAC championship will be held.
The women's 3k began the event at 10 a.m. with the men's 5k wrapping up the action at 10:45 a.m. The field of competitors featured representation from NCAA DI and DIII. Holy Cross and the University of New Hampshire sent their men's and women's teams, while Northeastern raced on the women's side only.
Then women's team finished tenth out of 17 teams, and seventh for DIII teams. Isabella Hastings (11:37.59 for 24th place) led the way with Anna Weygang (11:37.95 for 27th place) following right behind her. Junior Catherine Minegar had a strong race as the number three runner for the team. Freshman Emma McFadden was the number four runner in her collegiate opening race as a Seahawk. Sophomore Christia Assi rounded out the top five Seahawks with freshman Delaney Roache and Keira Sehl-Albert completing the top seven lineup.
The men's team came in 11th overall and ninth for DIII teams. In his collegiate debut, Cole Smith (17:33.16) led the Seahawks with a 69th place finish. Justin Ruffler (17:56.57 for 84th place) was the second finisher for the Seahawks. Gabe Victoria, rookie Carson Lau and Gianni Soucy completed the scoring five for Salve Regina. Soucy ran a collegiate personal best in the 5k beating his time from last year by seven seconds.
"Both teams are off to a great start on the season after a successful pre-season," remarked head men's and women's cross country coach Kacie Gallo. "I am excited to see how the team continues to develop and improve throughout the season."
