Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior Caroline Galligan [West Newbury, Mass.] put on a tour de force performance, scoring a school-record five goals to lift No. 3 Salve Regina past sixth-seeded University of New England 5-4 in double overtime of a first-round Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey playoff game Monday afternoon.
The Seahawks (9-7) trailed New England 4-1 with less than four minutes to go in regulation when Galligan, who had already scored once, caught fire. She scored three goals in a span of 1:44 to tie the score.
Galligan - now with 15 goals on the season - then scored in the 100th minute off an assist from junior Jillian Lee [Morristown, N.J.] to win the game and advance the Seahawks to a second-round game at No. 2 seed Endicott on Wednesday.
"Caroline was just incredible," Salve Regina head coach Jennifer Eldridge said. "We do work on five-minute drills in practice where we score as many as we can, so I knew the potential was there to do it, but I have not seen anything like that in a game before."
New England (7-8) seemed to put the game away when junior Lisa Baillargeon [Berlin, N.H.] scored in the 59th minute to put the Nor'easters up 4-1. However, Galligan netted her second goal of the day at 66:09 on an assist from senior Ashley Despres [Leominster, Mass.].
Galligan then sent the game into overtime with unassisted goals at 67:02 and 67:48.
"We were trying to keep everyone positive, from the girls on the bench to everyone on the field," Eldridge said. "They showed a lot of heart, and they stayed composed out there when they needed to."
Eldridge credited the play of midfielders Lee and Micajah Wiley [Nantucket, Mass.] for their play on both ends of the field. Freshman goalie Devin Eppley [Darien, Conn.] struggled in regulation, but made eight saves in overtime to help the Seahawks.
Galligan's outburst overshadowed the day of New England freshman Taryn Flagg [Livermore Falls, Maine], who scored two goals for the Nor'easters. With her first goal of the game Flagg set school records for most points and most goals in a season. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hall also scored one goal for New England.
