Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. - Sophomore Sean McAllister (North Arlington, N.J.) scored a pair of goals and classmate Nicodemo Camarda (Burlington, N.J.) added a goal and an assist to lead Salve Regina University to a 5-1 win over Endicott College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) men's soccer action Tuesday afternoon at Reynolds Field.
The win stretches the Seahawks (6-4-1, 4-2-1 TCCC) unbeaten streak to three games and marks their second-consecutive win over the Gulls, who fell to 5-6 (3-4 TCCC) with the loss.
Camarda's first career goal at 22:35 gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Chris Knoth (East Islip, N.Y.) sent a corner kick into the box that was played by McAllister to Camarda at the left post, and the back knocked the ball past freshman keeper Dan Higgins (Kingston, R.I.). Less than four minutes later, junior Billy Carroll (Babylon, N.Y.) converted a feed from junior co-captain Ken Johnson (Colonia, N.J.) into his second goal of the season to give SRU a 2-0 lead. Johnson controlled the ball in the middle of the field and slid a pass through the defense to a streaking Carroll, who blew a shot past Higgins at 26:10.
In the second, sophomore James Tollefson (Middletown, R.I.) took a long breakout pass from Camarda and beat Higgins on a breakaway inside the right post to stretch the lead to 3-0 at 63:45. McAllister's third goal of the season deflected in off the right post at 64:33, and his second of the game off a pass from freshman Brian Sweeney (Waldoboro, Maine) at 67:17 was fired into the left corner. Sophomore Ryan Coates (Wethersfield, Conn.) potted his second goal of the season at 73:53 to spoil the Salve Regina shutout bid. Freshman Kevin Ivester (Topsfield, Mass.) was credited with the assist.
"This is a very good result for us and I'm very pleased with the way my side played today," said Salve Regina head coach Craig O'Rourke II. "I thought McAllister, Carroll, and Johnson were brilliant on the attack for us and (sophomore) Ian Jentgen (Columbus, Ohio) may very well be one of the best centerbacks to ever wear a Salve Regina uniform. With him anchoring our defensive back four, we are an extremely stingy side when it comes to giving up scoring chances to our opponent. We'll take tomorrow as a scheduled day of rest and then get back at it on Thursday as we prepare for our showdown with conference front-runner Curry."
Senior Kurt Ginthwain (Tolland, Conn.) recorded three saves to earn his sixth win of the season while Higgins finished with one save. The Seahawks outshot the Gulls 13-10 and held a 10-5 edge in corner kicks. Salve Regina committed 19 fouls, compared to 14 for Endicott, which received two yellow cards.
The Seahawks return to action on Saturday when they travel to Milton, Mass. for an 11 a.m. contest with Curry. The Gulls return to 'The Ocean State' on Saturday for a 3:30 contest with Roger Williams.
