Reding's walk-off single helps Salve Regina salvage split

NEWPORT, R.I. - Sophomore outfielder Byron Reding [Darien, Conn.] delivered his second game-winning walk-off RBI of the season as Salve Regina University baseball salvaged a split of its doubleheader with Daniel Webster College with a 6-5 victory in Game Two.

The visiting Eagles enjoyed two big innings in Game One to cruise to a 19-2 win, their first-ever victory over the Seahawks.

Daniel Webster starting pitcher Kory Kiro [Goffstown, N.H.] scattered six hits and allowed just two runs for a complete-game victory in the opener. Sophomore first-baseman Michael O'Neill [Pawtucket, R.I.] crushed his third homerun of the season with two outs and none on in the bottom of the sixth to put Salve Regina on the board, 16-1. Junior infielder Jason Sluberski [Verona, N.J.] scored an unearned run later in the inning.

Bruce Brown [Lowell, Mass.], Tyler Bonin [Litchfield, N.H.], and Chuck Manning [Riverside, R.I.] each collected two hits in the opener. Manning, a senior infielder, drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double during a 10-run sixth inning.

Salve Regina (6-4) committed nine errors on the day.

"It's good to win, but I am very disappointed in the team," said Seahawk head coach Steve Cirella. "I expected a lot more. Coming back (from Florida), maybe a week off hurt us, but committing nine errors is not acceptable."

"J.P. Pyne is doing a great job in his third year," Cirella added about the Daniel Webster head coach. "As coaches stay in systems, they're going to have better teams. They're scrappy, they run, they're well-coached. They didn't want to give us either game; they certainly took it to us in Game One. Game Two, we had to struggle to beat them. You make four errors and give them five runs, it makes it easier for them."

Reding, who drew a bases-loaded walk in the team's last at-bat in the season-opener against Penn St.-Altoona during its spring break trip to Florida, entered the batter's box with two outs in the bottom of the 7th with Alex Melcher [Poughkeepsie, N.Y.] at second and Pat Quinn [Middletown, N.J.] at first. Melcher had reached on a one-out single to right, Quinn pinch ran for C Brendan Tapley [Warwick, R.I.] who was 3-for-3 with a triple, a sac bunt, and two RBI. After the baserunners advanced on steals, Reding stroked his first hit of the game to bring home the winning run.

Reding's basehit made a winner out of Seahawk reliever Laurence Liggett [Manasquan, N.J.] who entered the game in the 6th and induced an inning-ending double-play grounder. He struck out the last two batters he faced in the 7th.

Salve Regina hosts its first TCCC contests with a doubleheader against Western New England on Sunday (12 p.m.) while Daniel Webster (3-5) plays at Johnson & Wales University in Providence.
