Box Score 2 NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior OF Brandon Bursie [Smithfield, R.I.] singled in the game-tying run and his classmate Pat Quinn [Middletown, N.J.] came across the plate with the game-winning run following an error on the play as Salve Regina University baseball salvaged a split of The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader with visiting Colby-Sawyer College.
The Seahawk's starting pitcher for Game 1, Bursie struck out 12 Chargers and had a shutout into the top of the 5th inning. After setting the first two batters down on strikes, Bursie issued his first base on balls and it immediately came back to haunt him when sophomore SS Greg Mehuron [Waitsfield, Vt.] doubled to right center for the first Charger run. Junior C Shane Hoagboon [Mayfield, N.Y.] followed with a two-bagger to the same location to put Colby-Sawyer ahead.
Sophomore starter Ryan Gillan [Mountain Alton, N.H.] struck out six, allowed just one earned run on seven hits to earn his third victory of the season.
In Game 2, Seahawk starting pitcher Charles Matarazzo [Montville, N.J.], who supported his own effort with a pair of RBI singles, put himself in position for a victory allowing just two earned runs and exiting with a 4-3 advantage. But the Chargers had back-to-back two-strike, two-out hits in the top half of the 7th frame to tie the score at 4-4. Freshman CF Cameron Knight [Cambridge, Mass.] ripped an 0-2 pitch up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He came home when junior OF Matthew Corvo [Stratton Mountain, Vt.] laced a 1-2 pitch to the opposite field.
Quinn delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 7th to send the game into extra innings.
With darkness creeping in, Salve Regina reliever Matt Wierzbicki [Wethersfield, Conn.] got a 1-2-3 8th inning with two strikeouts and a grounder to short. Junior Craig Silva [Marlborough, Mass.] took the mound in the 9th and struck out the first batter he faced. Junior Kevin Emerson [Hinesburg, Vt.] reached on a single.
Silva sailed a pick-off throw into right field foul territory and pinch-runner Jordie Scheiner [Redding, Conn.] came all the way around to score the go-ahead run. Corvo worked a base on balls, but immediately got caught stealing to allow the Colby-Sawyer defense to complete the 9th inning.
Salve Regina C Dave Miller [Shelton, Conn.] was plunked by a pitch to start the bottom of the 9th. After Nicholas Politelli [Warwick, R.I.] reached on a fielder's choice, Quinn earned a walk to set up Bursie's at bat. Silva earned the victory when Quinn scored after Knight mishandled Bursie's single in center field.
