Anchorwomen tip Seahawks, 50-39

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshman Vandell Andrade (Providence, R.I.) and senior Courtney Burns (Rockland, Mass.) both had a double-double to lift Rhode Island College women's basketball over host Salve Regina University, 50-39, in non-league action at the Rodgers Recreation Center. The Anchorwomen improve to 5-2 with the win while the Seahawks fall to 1-4 with their third straight defeat.

All 12 players in the RIC lineup scored at least a point, topped by Burns' 13. Burns scored eight in the second half after the Anchorwomen went into the break up one, 22-21.

Rhode Island College held Salve Regina to 23 percent shooting from the floor, and the Seahawks made only two of 13 3-point attempts (18.8 percent). The Seahawks took an early 3-0 lead on freshman Meaghan Harden's (Sandwich, Mass.) 3-pointer. The other Seahawk trey came on their first basket in the second half (17:35) from senior Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.).

That made the score 26-24 in favor of the Anchorwomen before Ashley O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) scored the next five points as part of a 13-2 run for the visitors.

Junior Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, Mass.) made a pair of free throws and sophomore Laura Anne Dinan (Monterey, Mass.) followed with a layup at 5:39 to pull the Seahawks within seven, 39-32.

Burns hit a jumper at 5:08 and then made a layup a minute later for another double-digit advantage. After Kaitlyn Lendrum (El Dorado, Calif.) made one of two free throws and then a jumper, Salve Regina closed the gap to 10 (45-35).

The Anchorwomen struggled from the free throw line, only one of eight in the second half and three of 14 for the game (21.4 percent) to keep the Seahawks close. After a Seahawk missed layup, Vandell and Burns made successive layups during a 28-second span.

It was the fifth straight victory for the Anchorwomen in the intra-state series. The Seahawks posted their lowest offensive output in six years when they lost 58-38 to Medaille College during the San Diego Shootout (Dec. 28, 2006).

Salve Regina returns to the Rodgers Recreation Center hardwood on Thursday when it hosts UMass Dartmouth (5:30 p.m.). Rhode Island College hosts Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday in a Little East Conference contest.
