Fera's five goals the difference for Seahawks in 13-8 quarterfinal victory

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Andrew Fera (Cranston, R.I.) (CCC 2nd Team) notched four of his goals following halftime, as No.5 Salve Regina University separated from a tied game and secured a 13-8 victory over fourth-seeded University of New England in the opening round of the 2018 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 28) at the Big Blue Turf.

The Seahawks (11-6) advance into the semifinals for a date with top-seeded Western New England on Tuesday. The Nor'easters conclude the season with a record of 9-9.

UNE knotted the score at 7-7 with the initial tally of the 3rd period, before Fera struck twice in 41 seconds to seize the lead right back midway through the frame. Big Blue's last marker came with 9:55 remaining in the 4th, making it 11-8.

Salve Regina received three goals from Zach Makoske (Shoreham, N.Y.), with two apiece from Alex Makoske (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Pat Leary (Wakefield, Mass.) (CCC 1st Team / Rookie of the Year). Mike Mongelli (Roslyn, N.Y.) (CCC 3rd Team) had a game-high eight ground balls to go with an assist to Fera and three caused turnovers, which were matched by Mike Sheehan (Wading River, N.Y.). Matt D'Amore (Duxbury, Mass.) backstopped the result with 12 saves, and grabbed five ground balls.

The Nor'easters were led by a three-goal, one-assist effort from Alex Zadworny (Florence, Mass.) (CCC 1st Team). Garett Bozek (Nashua, N.H.) scored a couple, while Tom Luttrell (Greenbrae, Calif.), Mitch Mullin (Cumberland, Maine), and Adam Race (Erieville, N.Y.) (CCC 1st Team) each added one. Matt Layton (Medford, N.Y.) went 12-of-22 in face-offs and scooped up six ground balls, and Tyler Nevers (Southbury, Conn.) made 10 saves.

The Seahawks netted a couple early on, but UNE rattled off four in a span of 2:17 to gain a 4-2 edge after 15 minutes. Zach Makoske put in all of his goals during the tail-end of the 2nd stanza to flip a spread of one in favor of the visitors (7-6).
