HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Senior guard Kayla Kelley (Boston, Mass.), who led the Leopards with 14 points on the night, started the night off with five early points as Wentworth took a 5-2 lead in the opening minutes. The Seahawks came back to tie after three points from Briana Neary (Wayne, N.J.), who tied for the game high in scoring with 16 points. A pair of layups from sophomore guard Nattaly David (Hyde Park, Mass.) gave Wentworth a four point lead with three minutes to go in the first, but a 7-0 run to close out the quarter gave Salve Regina a 12-9 lead at the end of one.
  • After no scoring in the first three minutes of the second, freshman forward Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine), who had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, converted an and-one opportunity to tie the game at 12. Two more baskets, one from Foster and one from junior guard Abriana Busbey (Palmer, Alaska), helped to keep Wentworth within a point at 17-16, and moments later a layup from sophomore forward Mary Kate Gould (Medway, Mass.) tied the game at 18. However, the Seahawks again closed out the quarter strong, scoring seven unanswered points to take a 25-18 lead into the half.
  • Two early baskets from the Seahawks' Morgan Shuey (Corning, Iowa), who had 16 points in the game, had Salve Regina take a double-digit lead at 29-18. But the Leopards came back to close the gap and tie the game with an 11-0 run midway through the third. A layup from freshman forward Gabby Amoddio (Wethersfield, Conn.) and a three pointer from Foster got the run started. Busbey then made a pair of baskets, followed by a basket from David to cap off the stretch with four minutes left in the third. A three pointer from Salve Regina's Ashley Rourke (Londonderry, N.H.) ended the run and gave the Seahawks a 34-31 lead and started a 10-2 run for the visitors to close out the quarter and create an eight point lead at 41-33 going into the final period.
  • Neary converted an and-one to start the fourth and extend the Seahawks' lead to 11, but Kelley answered back with an and-one of her own. With Salve Regina still holding a 12 point lead with under six minutes remaining, Shuey hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to double digits once again. Kelley, who scored nine of her team-leading 14 points in the final quarter, responded with another basket with just over three minutes remaining, but the Leopards were not able to catch up. A late three from Amoddio and another basket from Kelley brought the deficit down to five in the final minute, but Salve Regina was able to hang on for a 57-50 victory.
