Seahawks sweep Wentworth in historical batting barrage

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The wind was howling to cool things down at Reynolds Field on Sunday, but the weather could not freeze the Seahawks bats as Salve Regina dominated Wentworth in a two-game sweep, outscoring the Leopards 38-7.

The Seahawks continued to demonstrate their command in all aspects of the game on Sunday, shutting down the Leopards offense and spraying the baseball all over the field. Salve Regina notched its highest run total in a game since 2013 with 22 (a 23-8 win over Eastern Nazarene), and its highest hit total in a game since 2010 with 22 (25 hits against Emerson College).

Seahawks 22, Leopards 2

The Seahawks scored 22 runs on 22 hits to beat the Leopards in game one, perhaps one of the most dominant games in Salve Regina baseball history. Brayden Clark (Beverly, Mass.) got the start and picked up where he had left off all season long, retiring his first seven consecutive batters faced on strikes. That was when the Leopards finally notched a single-- until Clark struck out the next two hitters. Clark's line was excellent: two runs allowed on seven hits, nine strikeouts, and zero walks through five innings.

As for the Seahawk bats, there were six hitters who had multi-hit games. Slugger Tyler Cannoe (Schenectady, N.Y.) highlighted that group, going three-for-four with a two-run homer and an RBI-double. Matt D'Amato (Midland Park, N.J.) continued to swing a hot bat, also going three-for-four with a double and an RBI-single. D'Amato is up to a .548 batting average, a number that currently leads the CCC. Not enough can be said about the Seahawks' dominance in this game across all phases, a theme that the Seahawks have lived up to all year, having won six straight going into game two.

Seahawks 16, Leopards 5

Salve started this game off as they have their last three straight games by scoring in the first frame. Cannoe doubled to score D'Amato, Christian Homa (Fairfield, Conn.) doubled to score another, and Mike Breen (Auburn, Mass.) singled to score a third. The Seahawks looked well on their way to another victory, but the Leopards were not going to lay down, answering with two runs in the bottom of the first. Despite being rather spotty in the first game, the Leopards showed much more life in the backend of the doubleheader.

After a bit of a stalemate, the Seahawks were able to load the bases with one out in the fourth inning with the top of the order due up. D'Amato drew a hit-by-pitch to drive one run across, and that was all the Seahawks could muster to gain a narrow two-run lead. The Leopards came within one run again before Salve blew it open in the next few innings. A bases-loaded Wil McCarthy (Pembroke, Mass.) triple would clear the bases in the seventh to put the Seahawks up 9-4. With more insurance, the Seahawks would win it 16-5 in nine innings.

The Seahawks (10-3, 2-0 CCC) have another conference bout on Tuesday as Roger Williams (3-10, 2-0 CCC) visits Reynolds Field at 3 p.m.
