Box Score 2 NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina baseball outscored the Gordon Fighting Scots 19-2 across two games on Saturday, making it 12-0 at Reynolds Field this season.
The Seahawks honored twelve seniors on Saturday, a handful of which will return to the diamond next season for Salve. Those seniors were Matt D'Amato, Chris Veneruso, Justice Welch, Dustin Siqueira*, Holden Ferrari, Tyler Cannoe, Zach Lopez, Graham Jeffries*, Sean O'Malley, Tommy DelVecchio*, Wil McCarthy, and Eddie Hardiman (* - captains). The Seahawks have thrived from senior leadership this season-- the performances of these individuals on the field matched with their character off the field speaks volumes about the Salve Regina baseball program.
Fighting Scots 1, Seahawks 8
The Seahawks took some time to get going in the first game. Perhaps it was the senior day celebrations slowing production down, or the light fog that had rolled into Reynolds Field on late Saturday morning. In the third inning, the Seahawks had the bases juiced with nobody out with the top of the order due up, maxing the potential for a big inning. The Seahawks managed just two runs without an RBI. A double-play ball scored one and a passed ball allowed another run for Salve to make it 2-0 in the third.
A leadoff double in the fourth led to nothing, and another opportunity came and went in the fifth. Back to back singles including a beautiful hit-and-run made it first and third with no outs. The following three at-bats resulted in fielder's choices and outs at home plate. Three Seahawk runners were caught on the basepaths by the Fighting Scots defense to get out of a huge jam and keep the game close. In the sixth inning, back to back singles looked great-- until a hose from deep right field forced another out on the basepaths.
Two frustrating innings made for a pretty good seventh. The first five Seahawk hitters reached base, and it was RBIs galore from there on out. Christian Homa (Fairfield, Conn.) drew a walk, Brandon Grover (Ashland, Mass.) had a sacrifice fly, and Shane Williams (Georgetown,
Mass.) had a three-RBI double to seal the deal. Brayden Clark (Beverly, Mass.) continued his outstanding season pitching seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits, one walk and fanning seven. Tommy DelVecchio (Westfield, N.J.) came in in the eighth and threw eight straight strikes, fanning two in that span. DelVecchio nearly went immaculate, but threw a ball that missed the strike zone by about an inch. The Seahawks had some missed opportunities on offense, but the pitching kept them ahead until the bats got hot late. And the heat remained in game two.
Fighting Scots 1, Seahawks 11
The Seahawks offense picked up where they left off late in game one and carried the bats and pitching into game two. The offense was carried by Homa (3-4, 2B, RBI) and Mike Breen (Auburn, Mass.) (2-2, 3R) in the 11-1 win. Dustin Siqueira (Trumbull, Conn.) had a big two-RBI single in the second to triple the Seahawks lead. Shane Williams had another multi-RBI double for the second straight game to make it 6-0 Salve.
The Seahawks pitching has been extremely strong all year and Graham Jeffries (Chelmsford, Mass.) had another impressive start. Jeffries pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits, fanning eight. Gordon had just three hits all afternoon, and one of those was a solo homerun in the sixth to get their lone run on the board. Jason Arrigo (Basking Ridge, N.J.) came out of the bullpen again and pitched the rest of the way allowing no hits across 2.1 innings pitched.
Salve Regina (24-6-1, 8-2-1 CCC) will host Eastern Nazarene (23-8) for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. and 4:00 P.M
